Iran Claims Major Aerial Victory Against US Forces
Iran has asserted that its air defense systems successfully targeted and destroyed two United States attack aircraft during a day of intense aerial combat within its sovereign airspace. According to Iranian state media, footage has been released showing a US A-10 Warthog plane being blown out of the sky on Friday, with additional reports indicating a second US aircraft, an F-15E Strike Eagle, was also shot down in the same engagement.
Chaotic Rescue Efforts Underway
The dual incidents forced both pilots to eject into hostile territory. In a daring rescue mission, US forces managed to save the A-10 pilot, but the fate of the F-15E pilot remains unknown, prompting an urgent search-and-rescue operation across enemy lines. This marks the first time a US jet has been downed by enemy fire since the conflict began thirty-five days ago.
Compounding the crisis, Newsmax reported that a US Black Hawk helicopter was hit by enemy fire while conducting rescue operations for the pilots. Fortunately, the crew is accounted for and safe. Separate videos circulating on social media appear to show American jets, including a KC-130 refueling tanker and two HH-60 Pave Hawk search and rescue helicopters, flying low over southern Iran as part of the mission.
Rising Casualty Figures and Presidential Response
Updated Pentagon data released on Friday evening revealed that the number of US service members wounded in the Iran war has increased to 365 soldiers. This total includes 247 Army soldiers, 63 Navy sailors, 19 Marines, and 36 Air Force airmen. The death toll for the conflict remains at 13 US service members.
White House officials confirmed that President Donald Trump was briefed on the relief efforts. A senior administration official disclosed that the President's national security team gathered at the White House, with Trump working from the Oval Office and receiving updates throughout the day. In a brief phone interview, Trump declined to discuss details of the search and rescue operation but insisted it would not affect ongoing negotiations with Iran.
When questioned by NBC News reporter Garrett Haake about whether the plane incidents could end negotiations, Trump responded, 'No, not at all. No, it’s war. We're in war, Garrett.'
Iranian Media Calls for Civilian Involvement
Iranian state media has taken an aggressive stance, urging civilians to capture the pilots of the downed Strike Eagle, with a reward offered by the Islamic regime. An anchor on a state-run channel based in Kohkilouyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province—a rural and mountainous region—called on local residents to hunt down and hand over the 'enemy pilot' to authorities. Viewers were also instructed to 'shoot them if you see them,' referring to US aircraft conducting search operations.
Footage has emerged showing tribesmen shooting at what appears to be an Air Force HC-130J Combat King II, a specialized search and rescue plane. Iranian media released images of debris and ejector seats from the downed F-15E, which costs approximately $100 million. However, the regime has a history of making false claims about shooting down piloted US planes, though this is the first instance of calling on the public to locate suspected American pilots.
Broader Conflict Context and Regional Strikes
If confirmed, the downing of a US fighter jet would represent a significant escalation in the war. President Trump vowed during a national address on Wednesday night to wind down the conflict in the coming weeks. As the war enters its 35th day, Iran has launched new attacks on Gulf energy sites, striking a desalination plant and oil refinery in Kuwait, as well as a gas complex in Abu Dhabi. Multiple fires broke out at a Kuwaiti oil refinery following a drone attack.
In a related development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed in a new video that most of Iran's steel production has been destroyed after US and Israeli targeted facilities. He stated, 'Together with our American friends, we continue to crush the terror regime in Iran... In recent days, the Air Force has destroyed 70% of Iran's steel production capacity.' Netanyahu emphasized full coordination between himself and President Trump, asserting that the regime is weaker than ever.
The Daily Mail has contacted the Pentagon for comment on these unfolding events.
