Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov has been admitted to a private hospital suffering from kidney failure, according to a report from Ukrainian military intelligence. The news has triggered intense speculation about the future leadership of the volatile Russian republic.
Health Crisis and Kremlin Scramble
Ukrainian state news agency Ukrinform, citing an anonymous source within the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine's defence ministry, stated that Kadyrov's condition is serious. The source claimed he is undergoing dialysis, with medical professionals unwilling to give a firm prognosis on his recovery. His declining health was hinted at over a week ago when he was last seen in public using a walking stick.
The report asserts that the situation has prompted urgent discussions in Moscow about a possible successor. The Kremlin, which installed Kadyrov as Chechnya's leader after two brutal wars, is said to be evaluating candidates. The frontrunners reportedly include Magomed Daudov, the speaker of Chechnya's parliament; Apti Alaudinov, a prominent military commander; and Kadyrov's own 20-year-old eldest son, Akhmat Kadyrov.
Dynastic Ambitions and a Controversial Reign
The potential succession plan appears to be already in motion. Last week, Ramzan Kadyrov appointed his son Akhmat to the role of acting deputy head of the Chechen government. This is in addition to the younger Kadyrov's existing post as Minister of Sports, a move widely interpreted as grooming him for future leadership and sparking accusations of blatant nepotism.
This is not an isolated incident. In 2023, Kadyrov appointed another son, Adam, as his head of security. Adam Kadyrov later made headlines for allegedly assaulting a detained man accused of desecrating the Quran. Since assuming power in 2007, Kadyrov is said to have placed at least 96 relatives in official or corporate positions, ruling the republic as a personal fiefdom according to critics.

Kadyrov's possible incapacitation throws the future of Chechnya into doubt and questions Moscow's firm grip on the region. He has been a pivotal, if controversial, ally for Vladimir Putin, maintaining strict control through a powerful private militia and unwavering loyalty to the Kremlin's agenda.
His forces have fought in Ukraine since the 2022 invasion, and he was a vocal supporter of pro-Russian separatists in the east and the annexation of Crimea. Internationally, Kadyrov faces sanctions from the United States and accusations from human rights groups of overseeing a regime guilty of torture, forced disappearances, and the persecution of LGBTQ+ individuals.
The sudden health emergency has reportedly drawn members of his powerful clan, including family from abroad, to his bedside in Chechnya. As the Kremlin deliberates on who might next lead this strategically important and restive region, the stability of Putin's arrangement in the North Caucasus hangs in the balance.
