Piers Morgan Sounds Alarm Over UK's Missile Defence Capabilities
Piers Morgan has issued a grave warning, asserting that the United Kingdom possesses "zero defence against missiles" as concerns mount regarding Iran's advancing ballistic missile technology. This statement follows heightened anxieties that Iranian missiles could potentially target London and other major global cities.
Growing Fears Over Iran's Missile Range
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have recently highlighted the global threat posed by Iran, with a spokesperson stating, "The Iranian terrorist regime poses a global threat. Now, with missiles that can reach London, Paris or Berlin." This declaration underscores the expanding reach of Iran's military capabilities, which now appear to extend far beyond previously acknowledged limits.
In a significant development, the IDF confirmed that an attack on Diego Garcia marked the first instance of Iran deploying a long-range missile capable of traveling approximately 4,000 kilometres since the onset of the conflict. Notably, Diego Garcia is situated around 3,800 kilometres from Iran, contradicting the regime's earlier claims that its ballistic missiles were limited to a range of only 2,000 kilometres.
Expert Analysis and Public Reaction
Piers Morgan took to social media platform X to express his concerns, writing, "So not only has Iran brazenly lied about its ballistic missile range capacity, but this means it can probably hit the UK with them - and we have zero, I repeat ZERO, defence against these missiles. Very worrying." His comments reflect a broader unease among security analysts and the public regarding the UK's preparedness for such threats.
Foreign affairs analyst Nawaf Al-Thani added weight to these fears, noting, "Iran may have demonstrated reach far beyond what much of the world believed it possessed. Paris comes into range. London moves much closer to the edge of vulnerability depending on launch point and payload." Some experts speculate that Tehran may have utilised intermediate-range ballistic missiles or even space launch vehicles to achieve this extended reach.
UK Government Response and Defence Measures
In response to these developments, a Ministry of Defence spokesperson stated, "Iran’s reckless attacks, lashing out across the region and holding hostage the Strait of Hormuz, are a threat to British interests and British allies. RAF jets and other UK military assets are continuing to defend our people and personnel in the region. This government has given permission to the US to use British bases for specific and limited defensive operations." This statement emphasises ongoing defensive efforts but does not directly address the specific concerns about missile defence systems within the UK itself.
The situation highlights critical questions about national security and the adequacy of current defence infrastructures in the face of evolving global threats. As tensions persist, the debate over the UK's vulnerability to missile attacks is likely to intensify, with calls for enhanced defensive capabilities gaining momentum among policymakers and security experts alike.
