Starmer Stands Firm Against Trump Over Iran Military Action
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has publicly rejected criticism from former US President Donald Trump regarding the United Kingdom's position on military strikes against Iran. In a defiant statement, Starmer confirmed that Britain will not participate in offensive operations led by the United States and Israel, emphasising a commitment to lawful and nationally beneficial actions.
Defensive Support Granted After Initial Refusal
Sir Keir detailed that he initially refused to allow British military bases to be used for US-led offensive strikes against Iran, a decision he staunchly defends. "I stand by my choice and have learnt the lessons of Iraq," he stated, referencing the contentious 2003 invasion. However, he later granted permission for the US to utilise UK bases for defensive operations specifically targeting Iranian missile launchers and storage facilities.
Trump's Disappointment and Parliamentary Reactions
President Trump expressed strong disapproval, labelling himself "very disappointed" with Starmer's initial stance and claiming it "took far too long" for the Prime Minister to alter his decision. This exchange has sparked mixed reactions within the UK Parliament, where some critics have questioned Starmer's perceived indecisiveness in handling the crisis.
The Prime Minister's announcement followed an Iranian drone attack on the Akrotiri Royal Air Force base in Cyprus, underscoring the heightened tensions in the region. Starmer reiterated that the UK is not at war with Iran and will only engage in actions that have a clear legal basis and align with British national interests.
