Storm Dave to Subside on Easter Sunday, Met Office Confirms
The worst of Storm Dave is forecast to pass over the United Kingdom during Easter Sunday, according to weather experts. An amber weather alert remains active for parts of northern England, Scotland, and Wales until 3am on Sunday, with a yellow alert lifting at noon.
Forecast and Warnings
The Met Office stated that Storm Dave will clear away to the northeast, leaving sunshine and showers across the UK for Easter Sunday. The showers are expected to be particularly heavy and blustery in the north. However, before the severe weather warning is lifted, severe gales are anticipated across central and northern areas in the early hours of Sunday.
On Saturday, gusts of wind reaching up to 66mph were recorded in Capel Curig, north Wales. The Met Office emphasised that these conditions could lead to travel disruptions and safety hazards.
Travel Disruptions Across the UK
Several major transport routes have been affected by the storm. Traffic Scotland warned that multiple bridges, including the Queensferry Crossing on the M90 and the Forth Road Bridge on the A9000, had restrictions due to strong winds. The A87 near Sconser on the Isle of Skye was cleared after 3am, having been restricted earlier.
National Highways reported that the A66 was closed in both directions on Saturday due to strong winds, and the Humber Bridge in Yorkshire was closed to high-sided and vulnerable vehicles early on Sunday. ScotRail confirmed that emergency speed restrictions would be implemented across parts of its network, resulting in longer travel times.
Potential Power Cuts and Safety Advice
The Energy Networks Association (ENA), representing electricity network operators, warned of potential power cuts and issued safety advice following the weather warnings. In a statement on Saturday, the ENA said, "The storm has the potential to affect local power infrastructure, increasing the risk of a power cut and fallen power lines."
Network operators are increasing staffing for operational teams and moving spare equipment to areas expected to be most disrupted, ensuring readiness if needed. Residents are advised to stay informed and take precautions during the storm.
As Storm Dave eases, conditions are expected to improve, but residual effects may linger into Easter Sunday. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
