UFC White House Event Security Plans Amid Recent Shooting Incidents
UFC White House Security Amid Recent Shootings

With the UFC's unprecedented White House event approaching, questions about security have intensified following recent violent incidents near the building. In late April, a man was charged with attempted assassination after allegedly firing a gun at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, where President Donald Trump was seated on stage. Suspect Cole Allen pleaded not guilty this month.

More recently, on 23 May, a gunman was shot dead by Secret Service agents in an exchange of fire at a White House security checkpoint. President Trump, who was at the White House at the time, was unharmed and thanked officers for a swift and professional response. One bystander was wounded in the incident.

The Event and Its Security Challenges

On 14 June, the UFC will host a fight card on the South Lawn, with President Trump expected to sit cageside, as he has done at numerous UFC events. The event coincides with Trump's 80th birthday and is intended to celebrate 250 years of the United States. UFC president and CEO Dana White, a close friend of Trump, will be seated nearby.

White has stated that approximately 4,300 people will attend the event inside the White House grounds, most of whom will be military personnel. Additionally, 85,000 fans will gather in the nearby Ellipse park, receiving free tickets. The specific security measures remain undisclosed, but Trump is typically accompanied by Secret Service agents at UFC shows.

Past Security Concerns

During early planning, White noted the significant security challenge, recalling snipers with .50 caliber rifles on the White House roof. His comments coincided with the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, a right-wing activist and Trump ally, at a Utah college campus.

The Secret Service's role proved critical in April when an officer was shot during the Correspondents' Dinner attack but survived thanks to a bullet-resistant vest. Alleged shooter Allen, 31, faces multiple charges. This month, 21-year-old suspect Nasire Best fired at the White House checkpoint before being neutralized.

The Fight Card

The UFC card on 14 June will feature seven fights, six of which include American athletes. The main event pits lightweight champion Ilia Topuria against interim-title holder Justin Gaethje. Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane will compete for the interim heavyweight belt.

Other American fighters include Sean O'Malley, Michael Chandler, Steve Garcia, Josh Hokit, Derrick Lewis, Kyle Daukaus, and Bo Nickal. Hokit faces Lewis, and Daukaus meets Nickal in all-American bouts. O'Malley fights Aiemann Zahabi (Canada), Chandler takes on Mauricio Ruffy (Brazil), and Garcia battles Diego Lopes (Brazil). Topuria is Spanish-Georgian, Pereira represents Brazil, and Gane is French.
