The United Kingdom and the United States have initiated the evacuation of thousands of non-essential personnel from key military bases across the Middle East, as fears of a potential conflict with Iran reach a critical point.
Bases on High Alert as Personnel Moved
Essential staff at the crucial al-Udeid air base in Qatar, a central hub for both British and American forces, have been relocated to hardened shelters. Air raid sirens at the facility, which is believed to house around 10,000 US troops, were tested in preparation for possible strikes. This dramatic step follows a veiled threat from US President Donald Trump to act "very strongly" if the Iranian regime proceeds with executing detained protesters.
In a parallel diplomatic move, the UK government temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran on Wednesday night and withdrew its diplomats, citing a severe security assessment. A Government spokesperson confirmed the embassy would now operate remotely.
Israel Braces for Retaliation as Military Assets Move
Israeli defence forces have been placed on high alert, with intelligence sources indicating the country is a likely target for Iranian retaliation should the US launch military action. A source told the Daily Mirror: "Israel has adjusted its defensive posture as it is believed an American strike on Iran is now very possible." The source added that all Israeli security agencies are preparing for a response.
American military planning is reportedly awaiting the movement of additional "military assets" into the region, which could include a US Carrier strike group and warplanes. Any potential US action would aim to avoid civilian casualties, with targets likely focusing on Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facilities and possibly nuclear sites.
Triggered by Protest Crackdown and Execution Threats
The crisis stems from a brutal crackdown on anti-regime protests in Iran over the past fortnight. According to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, at least 2,586 people have been killed—a death toll surpassing any recent unrest and recalling the 1979 revolution. The judiciary has signalled intentions for fast-track trials and executions, with protester Erfan Soltani, 26, reportedly earmarked for execution.
While President Trump stated on Wednesday he had received information that executions had stopped, he reiterated his warning, saying, "if it happens, we’ll all be very upset." Iran has accused the US and Israel of orchestrating the protests and warned of a potential preemptive strike.
The situation remains volatile, with non-essential US staff also being moved from bases in Iraq amid fears of attacks by pro-Iranian militias. As military preparations intensify and diplomatic posts close, the region holds its breath for what could be a decisive and dangerous escalation.
