In a decisive response to escalating tensions in the Middle East, the United Kingdom has announced the immediate deployment of military assets to Cyprus following a drone strike on a British air base. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer confirmed that HMS Dragon, one of the Royal Navy's premier Type 45 air defence destroyers, will be dispatched to the Eastern Mediterranean region alongside specialised helicopters equipped to counter drone threats.
Immediate Response to Base Attack
The decision comes directly after RAF Akrotiri, a sovereign British air base located on the island of Cyprus, was struck by a drone earlier this week. While initial online speculation suggested HMS Dragon might be undergoing maintenance, government sources have firmly refuted these claims, stating the destroyer is being "readied as we speak" for immediate deployment from Portsmouth.
Enhanced Defensive Capabilities
Accompanying HMS Dragon will be two Wildcat helicopters armed with Martlet missiles specifically designed to neutralise drone attacks. The Type 45 destroyer itself represents one of the most advanced air defence platforms in the Royal Navy fleet, featuring the sophisticated Sea Viper anti-air missile system and crewed by more than 200 personnel.
Sir Keir Starmer took to social media platform X to announce: "The UK is fully committed to the security of Cyprus and British military personnel based there. We're continuing our defensive operations and I've just spoken with the president of Cyprus to let him know that we are sending helicopters with counter-drone capabilities and HMS Dragon is to be deployed to the region."

The deployment occurs against a backdrop of heightened regional conflict. Just days before the drone attack, Prime Minister Starmer had granted permission for United States forces to utilise British bases for defensive strikes against Iranian missile sites. This followed joint American-Israeli military action targeting Tehran over the weekend.
Defence Secretary John Healey emphasised the seriousness of the situation, stating: "We are moving quickly to further reinforce our defensive presence in the Eastern Mediterranean. HMS Dragon brings world-class air defence capability, and our Wildcat helicopters are armed with Martlet missiles to counter the growing drone threat."
Minimal Damage and Precautionary Measures
Despite the direct hit on RAF Akrotiri, officials report no casualties and describe the damage to the base as minimal. As a precautionary measure, families of service personnel stationed at the base have been relocated to safer locations.
