Ukrainian military forces have executed a significant and devastating assault on a colossal Russian ammunition arsenal, triggering a series of massive explosions that illuminated the night sky and forced the evacuation of thousands of nearby residents. The targeted facility, a munitions storage base operated by the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate (GRAU) and holding an estimated 265,000 tons of weaponry, was rocked by repeated blasts under sustained Ukrainian bombardment, with flames turning the darkness into an orange glow.
Evacuations Ordered as Arsenal Erupts
Regional governor Andrey Bocharov confirmed that evacuation orders were issued for the civilian population in the adjacent settlement of Kotluban to ensure safety from potential detonations during firefighting efforts. "Buses have been prepared and sent for the evacuation. Civil defence shelters have been set up," Bocharov stated. The explosions caused Russian ammunition to shoot into the air throughout the night and into the morning, sparking urgent relocation measures for locals in villages across the Volgograd region.
Secondary Strike on Missile Guidance Plant
In a coordinated offensive, Ukrainian forces also struck a major Russian plant in the Tambov region that manufactures missile guidance systems for aviation and missile control. The Progress Plant in Michurinsk sustained substantial damage in the attack, with explosions and fire reported at the site. This dual assault represents a strategic blow to Vladimir Putin's military infrastructure, targeting both ammunition reserves and critical production capabilities.
Russian Retaliation Targets Civilian Infrastructure
In stark contrast to Ukraine's focus on military targets, Russian forces conducted overnight drone and missile strikes aimed at civilian energy infrastructure. Attacks on power plants in Odesa and the Zaporizhzhia region plunged parts of Kyiv into freezing darkness, with residential districts damaged by explosions. The Kyiv Post reported that approximately 2,600 apartment buildings were cut off from heating supplies due to these strikes, and ten people were wounded in a separate attack on a store in Barvinkove in the Kharkiv region.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces Air Force disclosed that Russia launched 24 ballistic missiles at Ukraine, with 15 successfully intercepted and shot down. Additionally, out of 219 attack drones deployed, 197 were destroyed, along with the only air-launched missile.
