Ukraine Deploys Anti-Drone Nets on 4,000 km of Roads

Ukraine has unveiled a significant new defensive strategy to counter the growing threat from Russian drone attacks, with plans to deploy extensive anti-drone netting across thousands of kilometres of critical frontline roads. Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced on Wednesday that the country will install these protective measures along 4,000 kilometres of roadways in combat zones by the end of 2026.

Urgent Response to Escalating Drone Threats

This urgent initiative comes in direct response to Russia's increasing use of remotely piloted aircraft to target military supply routes, rear bases, hospitals, infrastructure, and civilian traffic deep within Ukrainian territory. The nets are specifically designed to snag drone propellers, effectively preventing them from reaching high-value equipment, soldiers, or civilians.

An additional 1.6 billion hryvnias, equivalent to approximately $37 million, has been allocated to bolster these crucial protection measures. While a growing number of nets have been installed over the past year, Fedorov emphasised the need for further rapid expansion to enhance security.

Accelerated Deployment and Enhanced Safety

In a statement on the Telegram app, Fedorov highlighted the progress made in recent months. "In just one month, we increased the speed from 5 km per day in January to 12 km in February. This significantly improved the safety of military movements and ensured stable functioning of frontline communities," he said.

The defence minister outlined ambitious plans for the coming months, stating, "In March, we plan to close 20 km of roads per day. By the end of the year, we plan to install another 4,000 km of anti-drone protection on roads." This represents a substantial scaling up of defensive capabilities in a relatively short timeframe.

Broader Defence and Diplomatic Context

Alongside the anti-drone net deployment, Ukraine will expedite the construction of fortifications in the northeastern regions of Kharkiv and Sumy, as well as the northern Chernihiv regions bordering Russia. This multi-faceted approach aims to create a more resilient defensive posture against ongoing aggression.

The defensive measures coincide with upcoming diplomatic discussions. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that new talks with the United States will take place this week, continuing on Thursday. These discussions are expected to focus on a "prosperity package" and post-war reconstruction, as well as preparations for a potential trilateral meeting involving Russia, which Kyiv hopes will occur in early March.

International Political Commentary

During his annual address to Congress, former President Donald Trump commented on the conflict, stating, "We're working very hard to end the ninth war, the killing and slaughter between Russia and Ukraine, where 25,000 soldiers are dying each and every month." He added, "Think of that, 25,000 soldiers are dying a month. A war which would have never happened if I were president, would have never happened."

The deployment of anti-drone nets represents a practical and immediate response to the evolving battlefield dynamics, where drone warfare has become increasingly prevalent. By protecting vital supply lines and civilian areas, Ukraine aims to mitigate the impact of Russian attacks while strengthening its defensive infrastructure for the long term.
