Ukraine Announces Domestic Drone to Replace Chinese-Made Mavics

Ukraine's defence minister has revealed plans to deploy a homegrown alternative to the widely used Chinese-made DJI Mavic drone, addressing longstanding concerns over reliance on Beijing's technology amid its close ties with Moscow. The move comes as part of a broader digital transformation of Ukraine's defence ministry and military operations.

Shifting from Imported to Indigenous Drone Technology

Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's defence minister, confirmed that troops will soon begin fielding a Ukrainian-produced analogue of the popular DJI Mavic camera drone. Fedorov stated, "We will have our own Mavic analogue: the same camera, but with a longer flight range." While the manufacturer of this domestic version remains undisclosed, this development marks a strategic pivot towards reducing dependency on foreign components.

The retail-grade Mavic drones have become ubiquitous on the frontlines, prized by Ukrainian army units for aerial reconnaissance missions. Volunteer groups frequently run campaigns to source and fund these drones, highlighting their critical role in battlefield operations. Despite Ukraine's existing production of "suicide" attack drones and defensive variants, the reliance on Chinese-made models has posed significant security risks.

Comprehensive Digital Overhaul of Military Operations

In tandem with the drone initiative, Fedorov has pledged a sweeping, data-driven overhaul of Ukraine's military infrastructure. Emphasising "the mathematics of war," he plans to revamp the defence ministry's management and spending protocols to reward commanders demonstrating results on the battlefield.

Key components of this digital transformation include:

  • A mission control system for drone flights to enhance operational coordination.
  • Advanced data analytics for artillery crews to monitor performance and effectiveness.
  • A system allowing allied nations to train their military artificial intelligence models using combat data collected throughout the conflict, including statistics and millions of hours of drone footage.

Escalating Attacks on Critical Infrastructure

As these defence initiatives unfold, Ukraine faces continued assaults on its energy and nuclear infrastructure. A recent Russian air attack left more than one million households in Kyiv without power, with over 4,000 apartment buildings experiencing heating disruptions. The northern Chernihiv region reported 87% of its population without electricity.

Ukrainian officials and the UN atomic watchdog confirmed that several substations critical for nuclear safety were affected, including temporary power loss at the Chornobyl plant. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned these strikes, stating, "While Russian officials speak about the 'importance' of power lines, their forces deliberately strike substations, directly endangering nuclear safety."

Diplomatic Developments and Calls for Support

Amidst the military and infrastructure challenges, diplomatic efforts continue. Following weekend peace talks between US and Ukrainian officials, envoys for presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met in Davos, Switzerland. Russian envoy Kiril Dmitriev described the discussions as "very positive" and "constructive," claiming growing recognition of Russia's position.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged the United States to intensify pressure on Moscow, asserting that America possesses the capability to do more. He highlighted that some Russian missiles used in recent attacks were produced this year, calling for stricter sanctions to curb production. Zelenskyy expressed readiness to travel to Davos if Washington commits to security guarantees and a postwar prosperity plan for Ukraine.
