Iran launched retaliatory strikes against an American airbase early Thursday morning, hours after US President Donald Trump rejected reports of an impending deal. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for targeting an unnamed US airbase at 4:50 AM local time, alleging it was involved in earlier attacks near Iran's Bandar Abbas Airport.
Regional Response and Ceasefire Fragility
Kuwait, a US ally, confirmed it was responding to missile and drone attacks on Thursday morning. Israel also reported sirens for hostile aircraft activity in the north. A US official stated that the military shot down four Iranian attack drones and struck a ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was preparing to launch a fifth drone. The official described the actions as "measured, purely defensive and intended to maintain the ceasefire."
The clashes underscore the fragility of the US-Iran ceasefire that took effect in early April, dampening hopes for a peace deal and sending oil prices surging.
US Military Presence in the Middle East
The United States operates approximately two dozen significant air bases, naval facilities, and outposts across the region, from Turkey to Oman, hosting around 50,000 US service personnel. Key locations include:
- Bahrain: Naval Support Activity Bahrain (NSA Bahrain) houses the US Naval Forces Central Command and Fifth Fleet, with deep-water port facilities for large vessels.
- Iraq: The US maintains air fields at Al-Harir and Al Asad, along with dozens of camps and outposts. At the peak of occupation (2003-2011), 170,000 personnel were stationed across 505 bases.
- Kuwait: Ali Al Salem Air Base hosts the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing, a key hub for combat support. The RAF has also used this base.
- Qatar: Al Udeid Air Base is the largest in the region, hosting around 10,000 US troops and serving as forward headquarters for US Central Command.
- Saudi Arabia: Prince Sultan Air Base and Eskan Village near Riyadh support US operations and training.
- United Arab Emirates: Al Dhafra Air Base hosts the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing with MQ-9 Reaper drones, while the RAF operates from Al Minhad Air Base.
- Jordan: Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, upgraded in 2018, hosts multinational partners.
- Oman: Duqm port serves as a strategic UK maritime base east of Suez.
- Cyprus: RAF Akrotiri is a key UK operating base with fast jets, air refueling, and surveillance aircraft.
Iran's Missile Capabilities
Iran has the largest stockpile of ballistic missiles in the Middle East, with short-range missiles capable of reaching 435 miles. This puts bases in Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Oman, and the UAE within range. While Iran may have depleted its medium-range stockpile, it retains ample short-range capabilities. General Sir Richard Barrons noted that Iran's options are limited due to recent losses of top leaders, and missile launches expose sites to counterattacks.
