US B-1 Lancer Bomber Touches Down in Gloucestershire Amid Escalating Iran Conflict
A formidable American B-1 Lancer bomber, measuring 146 feet in length, arrived at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on Friday evening. This deployment coincides with the eighth day of intense conflict between the United States and Iran, marking a significant moment in the ongoing military tensions.
UK Grants Permission for Defensive US Strikes
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has authorised the use of UK bases for defensive American operations against Iranian missile sites. This decision, made on Sunday, allows strikes from Fairford and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, though Sir Keir emphasised the need for a cool head and legality, having initially withheld permission for offensive assaults.
Evacuation Efforts Continue as Britons Return Home
In parallel with military movements, evacuation flights are bringing British citizens back from the war zone. A second Government charter flight from Oman landed at Gatwick Airport at 12.30am on Saturday, following a route via Cairo. This adds to the approximately 6,500 Britons who have already returned from the United Arab Emirates since the conflict began.
Further flights are anticipated, with Qatar Airways announcing a limited relief corridor from Doha to Heathrow and other European cities on Saturday, and Etihad Airways resuming a restricted schedule to Heathrow, Manchester, and Dublin until March 19.
Political and Military Responses Under Scrutiny
Foreign Secretary David Lammy has indicated that RAF jets could legally strike Iranian missile sites threatening British interests in the Middle East. However, the UK's response has faced criticism from allies, particularly regarding the defence of Cyprus, where a UK base was recently hit by a drone.
While France and Greece have already deployed assets to protect Cyprus, the UK's HMS Dragon destroyer is not expected in the eastern Mediterranean until next week, as it is being equipped for a prolonged deployment rather than a rushed short-term mission.
US Warns of Surge in Strikes as Trump Demands Surrender
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has warned that strikes against Iran are about to surge dramatically, involving more fighter squadrons and bomber pulses. President Donald Trump has demanded Iran's unconditional surrender, as Israeli warplanes target Tehran and Beirut, and Iran retaliates against Israel and Gulf nations.
Domestic Political Fallout and International Diplomacy
Tory leader Kemi Badenoch is set to criticise the UK's war response in a Saturday speech, claiming allies feel they can no longer rely on Britain. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Starmer assured Saudi Arabia's Mohammed bin Salman of UK readiness to help defend the country if necessary.
As the crisis deepens, over 160,000 people in the region have registered with the Foreign Office, highlighting the widespread impact of the conflict and the ongoing efforts to ensure safety and stability.
