In a dramatic and perilous operation, US special forces successfully rescued an airman stranded behind enemy lines in Iran after an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet was shot down by Iranian air defences. How the Incident Unfolded
The F-15E Strike Eagle, a $31 million all-weather jet designed for air-to-ground and air-to-air missions, was brought down by Iranian defences on Friday morning, according to statements from Iran's Revolutionary Guards. The jet was operating in southwestern Iran, though the exact location and mission details remain undisclosed by US Centcom. Two crew members were on board: a pilot and a weapons-system officer responsible for target selection and weapon calibration.
Photos released by Iranian state media purported to show fragments of the downed US aircraft in central Iran, though the specific weapon used to strike the jet is still unclear. The pilot safely ejected and was rescued on Friday by two military helicopters, one of which sustained small arms fire, wounding crew members but managing to escape. An A-10 Warthog fighter aircraft involved in the rescue was also hit over Kuwait, forcing its pilot to eject before it crashed.
The High-Stakes Rescue Operation
Attention then turned to the missing weapons-system officer, who was trapped in Iran with only a handgun for defence, according to US officials. The rescue mission involved C-130 cargo planes and H-60 helicopters flying low over Iran, as seen in social media videos, with elite troops scanning the ground for threats using mounted .50 machine guns. US forces employed bombs and covering fire to keep Iranian troops at bay while locating the airman, who was hiding in a mountain crevice.
A senior Trump administration official revealed that the CIA played a crucial role by alerting the Pentagon and White House to the airman's precise location, enabling the rescue. "This was the ultimate 'needle in a haystack,' but in this case it was a brave American soul inside a mountain crevice, invisible but for CIA's capabilities," the official stated. During the extraction, US forces had to destroy at least one malfunctioning transport aircraft parked within Iran as the officer was moved to safety.

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the second airman had been recovered and was "safe and sound," sustaining injuries but expected to recover fully. He emphasised that no American casualties occurred during the rescue, which involved dozens of aircraft armed with "the most lethal weapons in the world." Trump hailed the mission as a demonstration of US air superiority and a commitment to never leaving a warfighter behind.
In response, Iran's joint military command claimed that new air defences had shot down the F-15E, and the Revolutionary Guards asserted that several US aircraft, including a C-130 transport plane and two Black Hawk helicopters, were destroyed during the rescue. Iranian officials had urged citizens to help locate the missing officer, hoping to gain leverage against Washington in a conflict that has already resulted in 13 US service member deaths and over 300 wounded, according to US Central Command.
