US Commences Major Military Exercise with South Korea While Fighting Middle East War

The United States has launched a substantial military drill with South Korea, mobilising thousands of troops, even as it prosecutes an intensifying conflict in the Middle East. The exercise, named Freedom Shield, began on Monday 9th March 2026 and is scheduled to continue through to March 19th.

Scale and Scope of the Allied Drill

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed that approximately 18,000 Korean military personnel will participate in the Freedom Shield operation. U.S. Forces Korea has not publicly disclosed the precise number of American troops involved in the training activities on the Korean peninsula. This combined allied exercise unfolds amidst speculation within South Korean media that Washington is redeploying certain military assets from South Korea to bolster its operations against Iran in the Middle East.

U.S. Forces Korea stated last week it would refrain from commenting on specific asset movements for security reasons. South Korean officials similarly declined to address reports suggesting the transfer of some U.S. Patriot anti-missile systems and other equipment to the Middle East. However, they asserted that any such movements would not significantly impair the combined defensive posture of the U.S.-South Korea alliance.

Potential North Korean Reaction and Regional Tensions

The Freedom Shield drill is anticipated to provoke a hostile response from North Korea. Pyongyang has consistently characterised the allies' joint military exercises as rehearsals for invasion and has historically used them to justify escalating its own military demonstrations and weapons testing programmes. The United States and South Korea maintain that these drills are purely defensive in nature.

North Korea suspended all substantive dialogue with Washington and Seoul following the collapse of the 2019 summit between leader Kim Jong Un and then-U.S. President Donald Trump. Tensions have heightened in recent years as Kim exploited Russia's invasion of Ukraine as an opportunity to accelerate his nuclear weapons development and enhance his strategic leverage by forging closer military ties with Moscow. In return, Russia has reportedly received thousands of North Korean troops and substantial weapons shipments to support its war effort.

The allies' drills follow a major political conference held in Pyongyang last month, where Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his hard-line stance towards Seoul, which he views as an "enemy," while leaving open the possibility of talks with Washington. He called on the United States to abandon its demand for North Korea's denuclearisation as a precondition for dialogue.

Nature of the Exercises and Diplomatic Context

Freedom Shield is one of two annual "command post" exercises conducted by the U.S. and South Korea, with the other being Ulchi Freedom Shield held in August. These drills are predominantly computer-simulated and are designed to evaluate the allies' joint operational capabilities, incorporating evolving war scenarios and contemporary security challenges.

As per tradition, the March exercise will be accompanied by a field training programme known as Warrior Shield. Notably, the number of field exercises scheduled during the Freedom Shield period has decreased to 22 this year, compared to 51 in the previous year. While U.S. and South Korean military authorities state that field exercises are often distributed throughout the year, there is speculation that the allies are deliberately moderating the spring drills to foster conditions conducive to dialogue with North Korea.

Liberal South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has expressed a strong desire for diplomatic engagement. Some of his senior officials have voiced optimism that an expected visit by former President Donald Trump to China in late March or April could potentially create an opening for renewed talks with Pyongyang.
