The United States has conducted a third round of retaliatory strikes in Syria, successfully targeting and killing a senior Al-Qaeda-affiliated leader. The operation is a direct response to a deadly ambush last month that claimed the lives of two US soldiers and an American civilian interpreter.
Target Eliminated: The Man Behind the Ambush
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that a strike in northwest Syria on Friday, 16 January 2026, killed Bilal Hasan al-Jasim. Officials described him as an experienced terrorist leader who was directly connected to the Islamic State member responsible for the attack on 13 December 2025.
That ambush resulted in the deaths of Sergeant Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, Sergeant William Nathaniel Howard, and civilian interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat. CENTCOM stated that al-Jasim was actively involved in plotting attacks and had a clear link to the incident that killed the three Americans.
A Message of Resolve from US Command
In a strongly worded statement, Admiral Brad Cooper, the commander of CENTCOM, emphasised the US's determination to pursue those who attack its forces. "The death of a terrorist operative linked to the deaths of three Americans demonstrates our resolve," Cooper said.
He added a stark warning: "There is no safe place for those who conduct, plot, or inspire attacks on American citizens and our warfighters. We will find you." This strike represents the latest action in a broader US operation ordered by President Donald Trump following the December ambush.
Operation Hawkeye Strike and Regional Cooperation
The operation, codenamed "Hawkeye Strike," has seen US forces, alongside partners including Jordan and Syria, target more than 100 Islamic State infrastructure and weapons sites. President Trump has stressed that Syria is fighting alongside American troops as part of the coalition against militant groups.
Following the original ambush, the Republican president noted that Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa was "extremely angry and disturbed by this attack." The ongoing campaign aims to prevent the regrouping of ISIS elements in the region, a year after the ouster of autocratic leader Bashar Assad.
The latest strike underscores the continued US military engagement in Syria and its commitment to targeting terrorist networks deemed a threat to its personnel and interests in the region.
