A senior coroner has concluded that Welsh Labour politician Hefin David died by suicide at his home the day before his 48th birthday.
Coroner's Findings on the Death
Senior coroner Caroline Saunders ruled that Mr David, 47, took his own life by hanging at his home address on August 12 last year. The medical cause of death was recorded as asphyxia and hanging. The inquest at Gwent Coroner's Court heard that Mr David was identified at the scene by his sister.
Mr David had served as the Member of the Senedd for Caerphilly since his election in 2016. He was a well-known figure in the area, having been born and living in the community he represented.
Political Tributes and Personal Grief
Following his death, Prime Minister and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer led the tributes, describing Hefin David as a 'powerful voice for the people of Wales'. In a heartfelt statement, Sir Keir said the whole Labour movement was grieving the loss of a committed public servant who dedicated his life to ensuring communities in Wales had the opportunities and support they deserved.
Welsh First Minister Baroness Eluned Morgan, speaking in the Senedd, called Mr David a 'truly remarkable human being' with a 'heart that loved fiercely'. She expressed particular sympathy for his partner, Vikki Howells, who is the MS for Cynon Valley and a Welsh Government minister.
A Family's Devastating Loss
In a moving statement, Mr David's family remembered him not just as a politician, but as a devoted family man. They said: 'Hefin was a devoted father who was adored by his daughters Caitlin and Holly, a much loved son to Wynne and Christine, a beloved brother to Sian, a brilliant uncle to Osian and Catrin, and a soulmate to his cherished partner Vikki.'
The family acknowledged the widespread respect and affection for Hefin from the community he served and his colleagues in public service. They have asked for privacy as they grieve their profound loss.
