In an exclusive revelation, broadcaster Alex Brooker has recounted a wild encounter with legendary actor Russell Crowe that culminated in an unexpected nap. The incident unfolded after Brooker pitched a unique sequel idea for the film Gladiator during a live episode of The Last Leg.
The Gladiator Pitch That Went Nowhere
During series five of the Channel 4 show, Brooker, now 41, proposed a follow-up titled Gladiators II: Son of Maximus to Crowe, who starred in the original 2000 blockbuster. His concept featured Crowe appearing as the ghost of himself, with Brooker humorously noting, "I think I was a ghost myself." Despite the creative pitch, the actual Gladiator II was released in 2024, produced by Ridley Scott and starring Crowe alongside Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal, leaving Brooker without any credit or compensation.
A Nerve-Wracking Live Moment
Brooker described the tension of pitching the idea live on television, with Crowe agreeing to decide on the spot whether to participate. "Imagine that on live telly, I've been absolutely custard pied – that's what I had going through my mind," Brooker laughed, expressing relief that Crowe went along with the bit. He praised the actor as "lovely" and a "great bloke," leading to an invitation for a night out after the show.
The Epic Night Out and Unplanned Slumber
The evening turned into a memorable gathering with an eclectic mix of celebrities, including Adam Hills, Johnny Vegas, and Jimmy Carr. Brooker even brought along his cousins from Croydon, making it a family affair. However, after indulging in drinks, Brooker admitted, "I fell asleep, we had a big drink, I fell asleep." This light-hearted anecdote highlights the unpredictable nature of celebrity interactions.
Soccer Aid: A Dream Come True
Shifting focus to his philanthropic efforts, Brooker discussed his upcoming fifth appearance in Soccer Aid for UNICEF, an event he holds dear. He never imagined receiving the call to participate, having watched the match on ITV for years. "If you'd have asked me before I started at the Paralympics in 2012 'What are the shows you'd love to do?', Soccer Aid would be right at the very top of it," he said.
Brooker has formed a "little kind of family" through the event, befriending fellow celebrities, professional footballers, and behind-the-scenes staff. He shared surreal moments, such as Leonardo Bonucci liking his social media post about being announced on Bake Off and Wayne Rooney following him on Instagram. "It's those little things, I still get giddy with all the footballers we get to play alongside," he remarked.
Overcoming Personal Challenges
Reflecting on his journey, Brooker opened up about his childhood experiences, including meeting football hero David Seaman while receiving treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital for limb impairments. Born with issues affecting his hands, arms, and a twisted right leg, he underwent amputation of his right foot at 13 months old. The hospital's care enabled him to walk, a fact he deeply appreciates.
Now, as he prepares for Soccer Aid at age 42, Brooker has started training early, aiming to be in the "best shape" this year. He admitted to past mental battles, feeling a need to "prove something" due to his disabilities, but has since found acceptance among teammates and crowds. "No one's thinking 'oh God, we've got to carry this guy,' I realised a few years ago that's just in my head," he said.
A Cause Bigger Than Himself
Brooker emphasized that Soccer Aid is "far, far bigger" than any personal insecurities, as it raises funds for UNICEF to help children worldwide. He praised the affordable ticket prices, with adult tickets starting from £20 and juniors from £10, making it accessible during the cost-of-living crisis. "This is an event that raises money to help children," he stated, highlighting the importance of not pricing families out.
As Soccer Aid for UNICEF approaches on Sunday, 31st May at the London Stadium, Brooker expressed excitement to reunite with the "great group of people" involved. He remains grateful for his career opportunities, having started later in life at Channel 4, and cherishes the privilege of being part of such a meaningful event.
