Bondi Hero Ahmed Al Amed Plays Key Role in Australia-Syria Diplomatic Efforts

Ahmed Al Amed, the Syrian-born hero who disarmed a shooter during the Bondi Beach massacre in December, has been actively involved in strengthening Australia's relations with the Middle East. Following his viral act of bravery, which saw him wrestle a gun from an alleged attacker, Mr Al Amed has leveraged his newfound prominence to foster international dialogue.

High-Level Meeting at Department of Foreign Affairs

This week, Mr Al Amed was pictured at the Department of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Canberra, alongside the official delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic. He was joined by a group of Syrian business leaders to discuss ways to enhance ties between the two nations. This meeting is believed to be the first high-level Syrian-Australian engagement since 2012.

In an online statement, Mr Al Amed explained, 'This visit comes within the framework of ongoing efforts to restore diplomatic relations and to work towards lifting the sanctions imposed on Syria, in a way that serves the strategic, economic, and social interests of both nations.' He added, 'It was a valuable opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue, strengthen mutual understanding, and explore avenues for future cooperation that benefit our peoples and contribute to long-term stability and prosperity.'

Focus on Economic Restoration and Investment

The Director General of the Syrian Investment Authority, Tala Helali, highlighted that the discussions centred on restoring Syria's economic connections with Australia, reopening the Syrian embassy in Canberra, and ensuring a secure investment climate. This meeting occurred shortly after Mr Al Ahmed attended the Expatriate Investors Support seminar organised by the Syrian Australian Chamber of Commerce in Sydney, where he noted 'promising' investment opportunities.

Mr Al Amed's involvement in these diplomatic efforts follows his heroic actions during the Bondi Beach shooting, where he confronted shooter Sajid Akram. His bravery has been widely recognised, including through a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $2.65 million for him.

Recognition and Community Gratitude

Upon his recent return to Bondi Beach, Mr Al Amed was honoured with a 'Key to the City' and a lifetime Waverley Beach Pass, granting him free waterfront parking at some of Sydney's premier beaches. Mayor Will Nemesh, presenting the award last month, praised his actions as 'a guiding light to prevail against the darkness', noting that he 'ran towards grave danger to save countless innocent people'.

NSW Premier Chris Minns also expressed gratitude via video message, thanking Mr Al Amed for demonstrating 'true Australian courage' by risking his life to save strangers. The community continues to heal from the tragedy, with Mr Al Amed's story serving as a beacon of hope and unity.

While recovering from surgery, Mr Al Amed personally received the substantial GoFundMe cheque, symbolising the widespread support for his bravery. The Daily Mail has reached out to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for further comment on these diplomatic developments.
