Euphoria Creator's Emotional Tribute at Season Three Premiere
Sam Levinson, the visionary creator behind the hit HBO series Euphoria, delivered a poignant and heartfelt tribute to the late actors Angus Cloud and Eric Dane during the season three premiere event in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The 41-year-old filmmaker addressed a captivated audience at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in a moving five-minute speech, honouring Cloud, who tragically passed away in 2023 at the age of 25, and Dane, who died in February at 53.
Remembering Lost Talents
In a video shared by entertainment outlet Deadline, Levinson openly discussed the significant delay between seasons two and three, attributing it to multiple factors. He emphasised, 'The real time was in trying to figure out how to find a way to pay respect to those who we've lost.' Ultimately, he dedicated the third and final season of Euphoria to Cloud, Dane, and producer Kevin Turen, whose contributions were integral to the show's success.
Cloud, who portrayed the beloved drug dealer Fezco "Fez" O'Neill, brought a raw authenticity to the series that resonated deeply with audiences. Dane, on the other hand, masterfully played the complex character of Cal Jacobs, a troubled father grappling with his own demons. Levinson's reflections on their passing were deeply personal, especially regarding Cloud.
Levinson's Personal Reflections on Loss
'When Angus died it was tough. I loved him deeply and I fought hard to keep him clean,' Levinson revealed, referencing Cloud's death from a drug overdose. He further philosophised, 'Death is what gives life meaning. You can't be arrogant about existence. You're forced to reckon with the fact that life itself is a wonder, a gift, a profound blessing.'
Drawing inspiration from the teachings of a late Orthodox rabbi, Levinson shared, 'The Rebbe says, "The only way to see great light is to pass through great darkness." Well, it feels good to be on the other side.' This sentiment underscored the premiere's atmosphere of both mourning and celebration.
Industry Tributes and Final Contributions
Following Dane's passing less than two months ago, Levinson issued a statement to People magazine, expressing, 'I was heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend Eric. Working with him was an honor. Being his friend was a gift. Eric's family is in our prayers. May his memory be for a blessing.'
HBO also paid tribute, stating, 'We are deeply saddened by the news of Eric Dane's passing. He was incredibly talented and HBO was fortunate to have worked with him on three seasons of Euphoria. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.' Despite his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Dane successfully completed filming for season three before his death on February 19.
In addition to his role in Euphoria, Dane will appear posthumously in the upcoming thriller Family Secrets, where he portrays a wealthy patriarch, ensuring his legacy continues on screen.
Season Three's Narrative and Cast Reflections
The final season of Euphoria, which premiered in 2019 with its cast in high school, introduces a significant time jump, placing the characters five years into the future. Levinson explained this creative decision at an HBO event in London last year, noting, 'Five years felt like a natural place because if they’d gone to college they’d be out of college at that time.'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the storyline picks up with Rue Bennett (played by Zendaya) 'south of the border in Mexico, in debt to Laurie [Martha Kelly], trying to come up with some very innovative ways to pay it off.' This new direction promises to explore mature themes as the characters navigate adulthood.
Cast member Sydney Sweeney, reflecting on wrapping up filming in November 2025 during an appearance on The Tonight Show, shared, 'It was super bittersweet because most of the crew I had worked with since I was 20, when I did the pilot. So every single time I'd go back, I felt like I was going home and I was getting to see everybody...They're a part of [my] family.' Her words highlight the close-knit bond formed over the series' run.
The premiere event not only marked the beginning of the end for Euphoria but also served as a solemn homage to the talents lost, ensuring Cloud and Dane's memories are woven into the fabric of the show's final chapter.
