A leaked Pentagon email has suggested that the United States could review its support for Britain's claim to the Falkland Islands, as officials consider ways to punish NATO allies for their response to the ongoing conflict in Iran. The confidential memo, which also considered suspending Spain from the alliance, expresses US frustration over certain allies' reluctance to back military action against Tehran.
Former military leader reacts
Admiral Lord West of Spithead, who served as a commanding officer during the Falklands War, dismissed the military impact of losing US support, stating it would not make the islands less secure. However, he called the threats an 'insult' to the United Kingdom. 'How dare they!' he exclaimed, emphasising that the Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory defended by a permanent UK military base.
Background of the dispute
The Falkland Islands remain claimed by Argentina, whose president is an ally of the US president. The US president has repeatedly criticised NATO allies, branding the alliance a 'paper tiger' and threatening withdrawal, following his offensive in Iran. The leaked email is seen as part of a broader strategy to pressure allies into supporting US military actions.
Despite the threat, Lord West insisted that the UK's military presence on the islands ensures their security regardless of US support. 'The islands are well defended by British forces, and we have no reason to doubt our ability to protect them,' he said.
