Gemma Collins Steps In to Shield Adam Thomas from David Haye's Behaviour
Former I'm A Celebrity contestant Gemma Collins has disclosed that she felt compelled to intervene and protect fellow campmate Adam Thomas from what she perceived as bullying by boxer David Haye during their time in the South African jungle. The revelation comes as Adam Thomas himself has opened up about the emotional and physical toll of watching his jungle experience play out on television, describing it as a profound struggle.
Confrontation Over Termite Terror Challenge
The tension reportedly escalated during the Termite Terror challenge, where David Haye, already embroiled in controversy following sexist remarks, allegedly pressured Adam Thomas to participate despite his clear reluctance. Adam, who lives with arthritis, found himself having to defend his position, while Gemma Collins observed the situation with growing concern.
Gemma recounted the incident on I'm A Celebrity: Unpacked, stating, "I think David Haye might have seen a weakness in Adam. There were times where I had to protect Adam in there." She explained that she consciously restrained herself from a full confrontation, saying, "If I was going full GC mode on David Haye, it would've been a disaster, but I had to remain calm and composed."
Adam Thomas's Heartbreaking Admission
Adam Thomas has been candid about the impact of his autoimmune disease, arthritis, which he says causes significant pain. In a heartfelt Instagram post accompanying a still from the show, he wrote, "This picture breaks my heart, as I know on the inside what I was dealing with." He admitted that watching the footage back has been difficult, revealing moments where he felt pushed to his limit and didn't recognise himself.
"Living with arthritis is something I don't really talk about, but in there it really took its toll," Adam confessed. "My biggest fight was pretending to put on a brave face and trying to hide the pain, which can be exhausting in itself." He expressed regret over not speaking up sooner, adding, "I wish I stood my ground instead of trying to keep the peace, but I've learned that being kind doesn't mean being weak."
Gemma Collins's Protective Stance
Gemma Collins described her approach as a subtle but firm intervention, saying she stretched her arms out as a non-verbal signal to indicate "enough" without escalating the situation. She emphasised her readiness to confront David Haye if necessary, stating, "I knew if it was ever gonna get too bad I would be taking David on. If I feel that something's too much, I'm not afraid to step up."
This protective dynamic was reciprocal, as Adam Thomas also comforted Gemma when she broke down in tears during their jungle stay, highlighting the supportive bond that formed between them amidst the challenges.
Reflections on the Jungle Experience
Both Gemma Collins and Adam Thomas have reflected on the intense nature of their time on I'm A Celebrity South Africa, which was filmed towards the end of last year. Adam acknowledged that there were days his body didn't want to keep going, but he persevered. The experience has taught him valuable lessons about self-advocacy and resilience.
Gemma's comments shed light on the interpersonal dynamics within the camp, particularly regarding David Haye's conduct, which has been criticised as bullying. The situation underscores the psychological and physical demands of reality television, especially for participants dealing with health issues like arthritis.
