Anne Hathaway Provides Update on The Princess Diaries 3 Amid Devil Wears Prada 2 Delays

Anne Hathaway has offered a fresh update on the long-awaited third instalment of The Princess Diaries, revealing that while work continues, the project is not yet greenlit. Speaking during her press tour for The Devil Wears Prada 2, the 43-year-old actress told Entertainment Weekly that the team is 'chipping away' at the script but that the sequel's progress has been slowed by the unexpected arrival of the Prada follow-up.

'One hundred percent, we’re constantly working on it,' Hathaway said. 'The intention is to make Princess Diaries hopefully next.' However, she cautioned that the film 'is not greenlit or confirmed yet,' adding that expectations are high: 'If you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park.'

Disney first announced The Princess Diaries 3 last year, 24 years after the original and 21 years after Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Crazy Rich Asians director Adele Lim has signed on to helm the project, and Hathaway previously celebrated the news on Instagram with the caption: 'Miracles happen. Back to Genovia... the fairy tale continues.'

Despite an open casting call issued by Lim, progress has been slow. Hathaway explained that The Devil Wears Prada 2 'cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space,' making it 'impossible to focus on both at the same time.'

Little is known about the plot, but several original cast members have expressed interest in returning. Julie Andrews, who played Queen Clarisse Renaldi, said in a 2020 interview: 'I think I would do it. I’m getting awfully old and crotchety, but I think to work with Annie would be lovely again.' Heather Matarazzo (Lilly Moscovitz) and Chris Pine (Nicholas Devereaux) have also indicated they would be open to reprising their roles.
