Iranian Propaganda Video Depicts Trump as Minion Failing to Open Strait of Hormuz
In a provocative move, the Iranian Embassy in Russia has published an AI-generated propaganda video portraying former US President Donald Trump as a Minion character struggling to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The clip, released on Wednesday, comes as the United States intensifies its naval blockade of this critical maritime passageway, which handles approximately one-fifth of the world's global oil supply.
Mocking US Naval Blockade Efforts
The video opens with a cartoon version of Trump floating on a wooden plank alongside an American flag, declaring "I'm going to count to three. When I open my eyes, the strait must be open." However, nothing occurs, prompting Minions representing allied nations including the United Kingdom, France, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar to begin cheering from another piece of driftwood.
Subsequently, an Iranian Minion presses a red button, chuckling as a "warning" tape descends over the strait, visually emphasizing Iran's asserted control over the waterway. The Trump Minion repeatedly insists the strait will reopen, but Iran responds by dropping increasing numbers of warning tapes, eventually inciting rage among the other Minion characters.
Contradictory Statements and Military Actions
This satirical video emerges amidst significant confusion regarding the actual status of the Strait of Hormuz. On Wednesday, Trump declared on Truth Social that the strait was "permanently open" following secret diplomatic talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, claiming China agreed to cease arming Iran. "China is very happy that I am permanently opening the Strait of Hormuz," Trump wrote. "I am doing it for them, also - And the World. This situation will never happen again."
Contradicting this assertion, US Central Command released an audio recording on the same day featuring a military officer warning transiting vessels to "prepare to be boarded." The officer announced a formal blockade of Iranian ports, stating "This is a legal action. All vessels are advised to immediately return to port if leaving, and discontinue transit to Iran if that is your next port of call, do not attempt to breach the blockade." The message explicitly threatened that any vessels breaching the blockade "will be boarded for interdiction and seizure" and that "we will use force."
Meanwhile, Iranian state media countered by claiming a crude oil carrier had successfully passed through the strait "without any concealment," further complicating the narrative.
Series of Propaganda Efforts
This Minion video represents the latest in a string of comic propaganda releases from Iran aimed at discrediting Trump. Just one day prior, Tehran's embassy in Tajikistan posted an AI-generated image depicting Trump being thrown into hell by Jesus Christ. That clip began with a foreboding voice stating "Your reckoning has come," followed by Jesus swooping from behind to punch Trump, causing him to bleed and scream as he descended into a fiery pit.
This imagery followed a public feud between Trump and the Pope, who had condemned rhetoric from the White House and called for Middle East peace. Trump responded by branding the pontiff "WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy," and later sparked controversy by posting an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus Christ on Truth Social. In that deleted image, Trump appeared in red and white robes healing a man with his hand while an American flag waved in the background.
Trump later explained he removed the image because "People were confused," claiming he viewed it as portraying himself as a Red Cross doctor. "Normally I don't like doing that, but I didn't want to have anybody be confused," he added regarding the deletion.
Geopolitical Context and Implications
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most strategically vital maritime chokepoints, with its control being a persistent source of tension between Iran and the United States. Iran's use of AI-generated propaganda videos represents a modern approach to psychological warfare, leveraging humor and popular culture references to undermine US leadership and policies.
These developments occur against a backdrop of escalating naval maneuvers and contradictory public statements, creating significant uncertainty for global shipping and energy markets. The juxtaposition of Trump's declaration of an open strait with simultaneous US military warnings of a blockade highlights the complex and often contradictory nature of contemporary geopolitical communications.
As Iran continues to employ digital propaganda tools to challenge US narratives, the situation underscores how artificial intelligence and social media platforms have become integral components of international diplomacy and conflict in the twenty-first century.
