Iran Responds to US Peace Proposal as Ceasefire Strains and Netanyahu Warns War Not Over
Iran Responds to US Peace Proposal as Ceasefire Strains

Iran has reportedly responded to a US peace proposal, but the response comes as the month-old ceasefire shows signs of fraying, with drone strikes around the region and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning that the war is "not over."

Netanyahu's Warning

Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the war with Iran will continue as long as the country possesses a stockpile of highly enriched uranium (HEU), which could be used to manufacture nuclear warheads. In an excerpt from an interview with CBS's 60 Minutes, Netanyahu said, "It's not over, because there's still nuclear material – enriched uranium – that has to be taken out of Iran. There are still enrichment sites that have to be dismantled." When asked how the HEU should be removed, he responded, "You go in and you take it out," adding that the optimal approach would be to enter Iran to secure the fissile material as part of an agreement. He also claimed that US President Donald Trump had told him he wants "to go in there."

Iran's Response to US Proposal

Iranian state media reported that Tehran's response to the US peace proposal had been handed to Pakistani mediators, without providing further specifics. Pakistan confirmed that it had forwarded the response to Washington. This development follows the US presentation of a peace proposal last week, which was reported to consist of a one-page, 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz while establishing a framework for further negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.
