Jonnie Irwin Dies at 50 After Battle with Lung Cancer

Jonnie Irwin, the beloved television presenter best known for hosting 'A Place in the Sun' and 'Escape to the Country', has died at the age of 50 following a three-year battle with terminal lung cancer. His family confirmed the news in a heartfelt Instagram post on Friday.

In a statement, a family spokesperson said: 'It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Jonnie’s passing. A truly remarkable soul, he fought bravely against cancer with unwavering strength and courage. Jonnie touched the lives of so many with his kindness, warmth, and infectious spirit.' The family requested privacy as they navigate their loss.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues and friends. Jasmine Harman, his co-star on 'A Place in the Sun', wrote: 'My heart is broken.' Scarlette Douglas shared a photo of Irwin filming, with the message: 'May the sun always shine on you, Jonnie. RIP.' Danni Menzies posted a quote about living on in those who loved us, adding: 'You will Jonnie xxx.'

The production team for 'A Place in the Sun' described Irwin as a 'much-loved part of the family for more than 18 years', noting he brought 'joy, wit and bundles of energy'. Rob Unsworth, Head of BBC Daytime, praised Irwin's 'warmth and fun' on 'Escape to the Country' and his inspirational reports on end-of-life care for 'Morning Live'. Executive Producer John Comerford called him 'clever, warm and funny', adding: 'He is an unimaginable loss to the Escape family.'

Irwin was born on 18 November 1973 in Leicestershire and studied estate management in Birmingham. His property expertise led to his TV debut in 2004 on Channel 4's 'A Place in the Sun – Home or Away'. He later fronted BBC's 'Escape to the Country' and 'To Buy or Not to Buy', as well as Sky One's 'Dream Lives for Sale' and Channel 4's 'The Renovation Game'. In 2022, he revealed his lung cancer diagnosis, which had spread to his brain, and accused 'A Place in the Sun' producers of dropping him due to his illness.
