Television presenter Jeremy Vine has publicly revealed his profound disappointment upon learning that his former Strictly Come Dancing partner, Karen Hauer, has been axed from the show. The 60-year-old broadcaster, who participated in the competition in 2015 and again in 2017, stated unequivocally that the BBC is "missing out" following its significant professional dancer reshuffle.
Major Professional Dancer Shake-Up at Strictly
A considerable number of professional dancers have been dropped from the line-up for the upcoming season. Alongside Karen Hauer, other confirmed departures include Michelle Tsiakkas, Nadiya Bychkova, Luba Mushtuk, and Gorka Marquez. This sweeping change represents one of the most substantial overhauls in the show's recent history.
Karen Hauer's Historic Tenure
Prior to her unexpected dismissal, Karen Hauer held the distinguished title of Strictly Come Dancing's longest-serving female dancer ever. Jeremy Vine emphasised her dedication, remarking, "She’s so loyal to that show." The pair first danced together in 2015, where they were voted out during week 8, finishing in 9th place. They later reunited for a memorable Christmas special in 2017.
Expressing his personal sentiments, Vine added, "I’m really gutted for her. I love her to bits and she’s so professional that if she’s cross about it she hasn’t even shown it to me." In a subsequent interview with The Telegraph, he elaborated, "I really think they are missing out because she was the longest-standing female pro. I’d love to see them think again on Karen."
Social Media Influence Allegedly a Key Factor
Insiders have suggested that Strictly producers are now evaluating professional dancers based partly on their social media following, particularly on platforms like TikTok. This strategy appears to be a concerted effort to attract a younger demographic of viewers to the long-running programme.
The selection process seems to favour professionals with larger online audiences over those who are less active on social media. For instance, axed dancer Nadiya Bychkova has approximately 19,000 followers, while Dianne Buswell, who retains her place, boasts a substantial 966,000 followers. Similarly, Karen Hauer's follower count sits around 9,000, in stark contrast to newcomer Alexis, who has been retained and commands an impressive 190,000 followers.
Emotional Fallout for Axed Dancers
Karen Hauer herself described her removal from the show as "stressful and emotional." Reflecting on this significant career shift, she noted, "It's been a terribly stressful and emotional time and my four dogs have really helped me get through it. What's just happened is part of life and the stresses that go with it."
Spin-Off Show Also Faces Overhaul
The restructuring extends beyond the main competition. Reports indicate that Fleur East and Janette Manrara have also been axed from Strictly Come Dancing's companion programme, It Takes Two. Janette Manrara, a former Strictly professional, took over hosting duties in 2021 after eight years on the main show. Fleur East, a pop star who reached the final in 2022, joined the spin-off's line-up in 2023.
Industry sources suggest BBC executives are pushing for a bold new direction for the weeknight BBC Two show, aiming for a comprehensive revamp in the wake of various scandals that have affected the franchise. An insider told The Sun, "Fans will be stunned that this bloodbath is continuing, but bosses are determined to overhaul the show completely. Nobody feels safe right now and there's a real drive behind the scenes to usher in a fresh era after all the recent drama."
The source added that the priority is to establish "a clean slate by September and putting distance between the show and the controversies of recent years." It was clarified that this does not necessarily mean Janette Manrara and Fleur East are permanently out of the picture, as there could be potential for other roles within the BBC's programming portfolio.
Further Changes Within the Professional Ranks
Additional adjustments are being made to the professional dancer roster. Neil Jones, 43, who has infrequently been paired with a celebrity contestant, will again go without a partner this year. The same applies to Nancy Xu, 34. It is believed both may still participate in the show's large group dance numbers, maintaining a presence albeit in a reduced capacity.
This widespread restructuring points to a clear strategic shift by BBC bosses, who are reportedly seeking an entirely fresh start for Strictly Come Dancing. The move follows years of mounting criticism and controversy surrounding the conduct and selection of professional dancers, signalling a determined effort to rejuvenate the beloved franchise for its future seasons.
