The Kremlin has warned the West to prepare for more drone strikes following a Russian drone impact on a Romanian apartment block, which occurred overnight in NATO territory. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of the Kremlin’s security council and former Russian president, declared 'this is just the beginning' in a threat directed at the West, specifically blaming the UK and its allies.
Medvedev stated, 'Let them get ready: this will continue to happen. There is a war.' He claimed that the West was responsible for the war launched by Putin, which has devastated Ukraine, and labelled NATO leaders as 'scum'. He said, 'The Euro-impotents are screaming about a drone hitting a Romanian apartment building. European states are directly involved in the war with Russia, and no one disputes that anymore.'
He further alleged, 'Yes, they are fighting with the help of Banderites [Ukrainian nationalists], but what difference does it make to us? After all, European drones, spare parts for them, other weapons, not to mention intelligence, are participating in attacks on our country every day. As a result of their actions, residential buildings are damaged, killing our civilians.'
Medvedev accused Western leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, Friedrich Merz, Emmanuel Macron, and Sir Keir Starmer, of having 'blood on their hands' and called them 'repugnant parasites'. He linked the drone strike to a recent attack in Starobilsk, where 21 students died in occupied Luhansk, which Russia blamed on Ukraine.
Threatening more strikes, Medvedev warned, 'The citizens of EU states, like the populations of the warring countries, will not be able to sleep peacefully. Especially in those places where drone production facilities are located for [Ukrainian] forces. So shut up. This is just the beginning.'
He asserted that the West's 'imbecilic leaders' knew how to end the war, implying that they should cease support for Ukraine and allow Russia to invade. Medvedev's rhetoric was echoed by Russian senator and former space agency chief Dmitry Rogozin, who heads drone fighters in the war. Rogozin told Romanian leaders, 'Don’t you yourselves think that by providing transit and direct supplies of weapons and ammunition to Kyiv, you have long since dragged yourselves into the war? So your surprise at the arriving drone looks like the height of hypocrisy? There's still more to come, Romanian gentlemen…'
In response, Romania and NATO announced they would tighten defences, with Bucharest accusing the Putin regime of 'a serious and irresponsible escalation'. F-16 fighters were scrambled from Romania, and the country later expelled a Russian diplomat from Constanta, a Black Sea resort, declaring the Russian consul general persona non grata.
