Lana Del Rey's Former Fiancé Clayton Johnson Reflects on Her Marriage to Jeremy Dufrene

Clayton Johnson, the ex-fiancé of global music sensation Lana Del Rey, has publicly shared his complex emotions regarding her recent marriage to gator tour guide Jeremy Dufrene. The 37-year-old country music star admitted that while the situation "stings," he ultimately wishes nothing but happiness for his former partner.

A Bittersweet Revelation on Bachelor Happy Hour Podcast

During a candid appearance on the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast this Wednesday, Johnson opened up to hosts Charity Lawson and Rachel Recchia about Del Rey's marital status. "Obviously, she's married now," Johnson acknowledged. "And I think that when you love somebody, and it comes from a pure place, and she's somebody that I loved and I love, for her to find her person and for her to be as happy as she is, like she is glowing, nothing could make me happier for her."

The Nashville-based songwriter elaborated on his conflicting feelings, stating, "It might sting a little bit, to be honest with you, but if you really love somebody in the purest form, how could you be upset at that?" Johnson emphasized his continued respect for Del Rey, noting he has "nothing but amazing things to say" about the 40-year-old singer.

The History of Their Relationship

Johnson and Del Rey were first reported to be engaged in December 2020, though their relationship ultimately ended before Del Rey went on to marry Dufrene in 2024. Johnson revealed they initially "met in passing at church" before reconnecting during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I was traveling back and forth to Nashville at the time between LA, and we just really connected over what we wanted our futures to look like, old country music, and, yeah, what our futures look like to us," Johnson recalled. "It was really easy to connect. We had a month of just FaceTiming, and I feel like we really became best friends over that time. So when you have that together and then you're together in person, we were pretty inseparable when that happened."

Regarding their rapid engagement, Johnson attributed the pace to pandemic circumstances. "I think COVID was a lot like dog years, you know, one month in COVID time is really like one year in the real world," he explained. "But at the same time, it just felt so right in all the ways."

Post-Breakup Dynamics and Career Crossroads

Following their split, Johnson disclosed that they maintained a working relationship for a period and were "still kind of maybe testing the waters" before ultimately parting ways for good. He described their relationship as a "huge" and "really impactful" part of his life that he continues to value.

Johnson also addressed his participation on Taylor Frankie Paul's since-canceled season of The Bachelorette, clarifying that his appearance was not motivated by any desire for revenge against Del Rey. "I truly don't have any place in my heart for any sort of revenge, any hate," he asserted. "It did not come from a place of wanting to get back at her by any means. This was for me and this was for my journey. So had nothing to do with that whatsoever."

This clarification is particularly relevant given Del Rey's well-documented fandom of reality television, including The Bachelor franchise which she named as her favorite TV show in a 2022 interview. Del Rey even appeared on season three of Hulu's The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, filming with cast members after her Stagecoach music festival performance.

Musical Careers and New Beginnings

Before their separation, Johnson briefly collaborated with Del Rey on a track from her Blue Bannisters album. While Johnson's Spotify monthly listeners stand at approximately 50,000 compared to Del Rey's 66 million, he has established himself as a working musician, performing with artists like Sabrina Carpenter and Scotty McCreery, and releasing his first EP titled Live to Learn last year.

Meanwhile, Del Rey and Dufrene first encountered each other in 2019 during one of Dufrene's swamp tours, reconnecting years later before marrying in a Louisiana ceremony in 2024. The couple resides in a $273,000 five-room house in Des Allemands that Dufrene constructed from the ground up in 2021. This home features prominently in Del Rey's new music video White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter, which explores her relationship with Dufrene.

Johnson's reflections offer a rare glimpse into the personal life of one of music's most enigmatic stars, highlighting the enduring complexity of past relationships even as new chapters begin.
