French reality television star Loana Petrucciani, who shot to fame after a controversial poolside encounter on the inaugural season of Loft Story, the French adaptation of Big Brother, has been found dead at her home. She was 48 years old.
Investigation Launched into Sudden Death
Prosecutor Damien Martinelli confirmed that Loana was discovered deceased at her residence in Nice, with indications suggesting she had been dead for several days. Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the precise causes of her untimely passing.
A Television Phenomenon Remembered
Loana first captivated audiences in 2001 when she entered the Loft Story house, living under constant camera surveillance for ten weeks alongside strangers. Her candid and often raw behaviour, including a memorable intimate moment in the pool with fellow contestant Jean-Edouard Lipa, sparked national debate but ultimately led her to victory.
Following her win, she was celebrated with a parade down the Champs-Élysées and secured magazine deals, including a cover feature for Elle magazine photographed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino. She later authored a deeply personal memoir detailing her experiences.
Tributes from the Industry
Television network M6, which aired Loft Story, paid tribute, stating: "An iconic figure of the first season of 'Loft Story', she will forever remain a personality who profoundly marked an entire generation of viewers," praising her spontaneity, sensitivity, and authenticity.
Alexia Laroche-Joubert, CEO of Banijay France, the production company behind the show, expressed immense emotion, recalling their 25-year association. "I witnessed her successes and her struggles. My thoughts are with her mother, Violette, her daughter, her brother, and the other housemates," she said, emphasising that behind the public image was a sensitive and intelligent woman.
Benjamin Castaldi, the presenter of Loft Story, reflected poignantly on her legacy. "There are some faces we never forget. And hers, Loana's, is part of our collective history. We lived a revolution together. But maybe we forgot, along the way, the important thing: Behind the phenomenon... There was a woman."
Struggles with Mental Health
In her memoir, the Cannes-born star openly discussed previous suicide attempts and the psychological toll of fame. She described feeling insecure upon entering the show, recalling a casting director's harsh questioning that left her feeling exposed.
"I went there feeling very insecure. I was worried," she wrote. "There are two women inside me. The public loved both. Before, we saw a lot of the extroverted Loana who danced on the catwalks, but we didn't see the other side, because she was too shy to express herself."
In the early 2010s, Loana survived a serious suicide attempt that left her in a coma. It was later revealed she had made several prior attempts on her life, highlighting ongoing personal struggles.
Her death has reignited conversations about the pressures faced by reality television stars and the lasting impact of sudden fame.
