Mexico’s ex-president accuses US of plotting to weaken governing party

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexico’s former president, has accused US officials of attempting to weaken the governing Morena party and strengthen the opposition. In a letter posted on X, he alleged that Washington is using investigations into Mexican governors and propaganda to achieve this goal.

López Obrador, known as Amlo, wrote that some US officials are “plotting to weaken Morena and strengthen the rightwing opposition in Mexico with the aim of restoring a subservient, corrupt, mafia-like, and cruel government.” He also accused them of using “Hitler-like propaganda” by repeating lies ahead of the November elections to blame Mexico for US problems.

The letter comes amid heightened tensions between Mexico and the US, following revelations that CIA agents were operating in Mexico and the indictment of Sinaloa’s governor on drug-trafficking charges. Reports also indicate that two other Mexican governors had their US visas revoked and are under investigation.

Current President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has closely followed Amlo’s rhetoric, displayed the letter during her morning news conference, reading excerpts and expressing delight at the debate. Amlo, though retired, retains significant influence over Morena.

In the five-page letter, López Obrador also commented on a “surprising change” in US President Donald Trump’s attitude towards Mexico. He recalled their alliance based on common ground in trade and security, but speculated that Trump’s second-term shift might be due to reliance on “inexperienced, resentful, and fanatical advisers.” Amlo urged Trump to “tell the parasites surrounding him to go to hell” and called for the return of the earlier, more cooperative Trump.
