Venezuelan Opposition Leader Machado Draws Massive Madrid Rally, Snubs Sánchez
Venezuela's exiled opposition leader, María Corina Machado, drew a crowd of several thousand supporters to a significant rally in Madrid on Saturday, April 18, 2026. The event, held in the Spanish capital's iconic Puerta del Sol, saw Machado standing alongside Madrid's conservative regional leader, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, a vocal critic of Spain's progressive Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Machado Declines Meeting with Sánchez
During her multicountry European tour, Machado explicitly declined a meeting with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who was hosting a summit of progressive leaders in Barcelona on the same day. Machado told reporters that the nature of Sánchez's meeting demonstrated why such an encounter was not advisable. She contrasted this with her praise for former U.S. President Donald Trump, who she credited with ousting Nicolás Maduro in January 2026.
Praise for Trump and Nobel Prize Presentation
Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, reiterated her support for Donald Trump, stating he was the only world leader who had risked his country's citizens for Venezuela's freedom, referencing the U.S. military operation in January. Earlier this year, she presented Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize, an act she said she did not regret, despite his administration having largely sidelined her democratic crusade. She emphasized she remains in permanent contact with Trump administration officials and trusts Washington's phased process in Venezuela post-Maduro.
European Tour and Venezuelan Political Context
Machado's European tour included meetings with leaders from France, Italy, and the Netherlands. This comes as Venezuela's interim President, Delcy Rodríguez, continues in her temporary role, exceeding the initial 90-day limit, while the U.S. government has lifted some sanctions against her. Machado criticized Rodríguez's government, labeling it as representing chaos, violence, and terror, and reaffirmed her belief in the necessity of democratic elections in Venezuela.
Venezuelan Diaspora in Spain
Spain is home to the largest Venezuelan population outside the Americas, with approximately 600,000 Venezuelans residing there, many fleeing political persecution, violence, and economic collapse. A majority live in Madrid, contributing to the rally's substantial turnout. Attendee Grehlsy Peñuela, a 27-year-old Venezuelan migrant, expressed hope in Machado's eventual return to Caracas, stating she would only consider returning to Venezuela if the current government steps down completely.
Machado's Future Plans
At an earlier event, Machado insisted she will return to Venezuela but declined to specify when or how, acknowledging the challenges involved. Her rally in Madrid highlighted ongoing international support for her opposition movement amid Venezuela's protracted political crisis.
