Nicholas Brendon, best known for playing Xander Harris in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54. His family confirmed that he passed away on Friday in his sleep of natural causes.
In a statement, his family said: 'Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years, Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans.' They described him as 'passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create'.
Tributes have poured in from former co-stars. Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg, wrote on social media: 'My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP.' Emma Caulfield, who played Anya Jenkins, shared a video of Brendon with a broken heart emoji and the caption: 'I love you Nicky.'
Brendon also appeared in shows such as Criminal Minds, Private Practice and Kitchen Confidential, as well as films including Demon Island and Psycho Beach Party. He was born in Los Angeles in 1971 and credited acting with helping him manage a stammer, later becoming a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America.
In 2023, Brendon revealed he had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and had suffered a heart attack. He also had cauda equina syndrome (CES). His family noted: 'While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis, and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.'
