The statement was jointly released by the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Spain, as well as the presidents of the European Commission and European Council. They collectively emphasized the urgency of halting hostilities in Lebanon to protect civilian lives and avert broader geopolitical risks.
Ceasefire Welcomed but Permanent Solution Sought
While the leaders expressed support for the current ceasefire, they underscored the need for it to become a permanent arrangement. "We strongly encourage quick progress towards a substantive negotiated settlement," the statement read. This settlement is deemed crucial not only for safeguarding the civilian population in Iran but also for ensuring long-term security across the Middle East.
The leaders warned that failure to secure a lasting peace could trigger a severe global energy crisis, highlighting the interconnected nature of regional conflicts and international economic stability. In their appeal, the coalition called upon all involved parties to fully implement the ceasefire, with specific emphasis on compliance in Lebanon. Additionally, they pledged that their governments would contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key conduit for global oil shipments.
The backdrop to this diplomatic push includes recent airstrikes in southern Lebanon, such as one in the Abbasiyeh area near Tyre, which resulted in significant smoke and debris, underscoring the immediate humanitarian and security concerns driving the leaders' actions.
