Stephen Graham's Emotional MOBO Award Dedication to Stepfather Mike Fazakerley
Stephen Graham secured the prestigious MOBO Award for Best Performance in TV/Film during a moving ceremony held at Manchester's Co-op Live venue on Thursday evening. The acclaimed actor, celebrated for his role in Adolescence, delivered a deeply personal acceptance speech that paid tribute to his stepfather, Mike Fazakerley.
A Heartfelt Tribute on Stage
Upon receiving the award, Graham expressed profound gratitude to the MOBO organisation, describing the recognition as "a huge honour" that "means the world" to him. He generously acknowledged his fellow nominees before turning his attention to family matters.
"I'd like to dedicate this award to my dad, my pops. The one and only, Mike Fazakerley," Graham declared emotionally. The camera captured Mike visibly moved, beating his hand against his heart as the actor concluded with "God bless, namaste."
Family Support and Rare Appearances
The ceremony marked a special family occasion with several notable attendees. Graham's stepfather Mike and half-brother Nathan made rare public appearances to support the actor. Graham was also accompanied by his 19-year-old son Alfie, whom he shares with wife Hannah Walters, along with their 21-year-old daughter Gracie.
Mike Fazakerley married Graham's mother Mary in 1989 when the actor was just ten years old. Despite this family transition, Graham maintained positive relationships with both his biological father and stepfather, developing particularly strong bonds with Mike over the years.
Cultural Guidance and Personal Identity
Graham has frequently credited his stepfather with helping him navigate questions of cultural identity and personal belonging. Mike, who was born in Africa with Jamaican paternal heritage, provided crucial guidance during Graham's formative years.
In a revealing 2019 interview with BBC Desert Island Discs, Graham reflected: "There were times growing up where I would be slightly unsure of where I fitted in. Sometimes I'd be accepted by my white cousins and then my black cousins wouldn't really... So it was kind of like where do I belong?"
He continued: "He helped me see who I am and what I am is good enough. He helped me find my own way... Pops is mixed race so that is where I learnt all the history of my culture and where I am from and what I am about."
Consistent Emotional Family Reflections
Graham has demonstrated consistent emotional openness when discussing family matters throughout his career. During a March 2025 appearance on Capital Breakfast to promote Adolescence, he became visibly moved while recounting how his parents supported his career achievements.
He shared a particularly touching memory about informing his father upon landing a role alongside Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese's The Irishman: "I went 'Dad, you'll never guess who, I'm going to be working with!' and he's like 'That's amazing son!'... You know, he proper backed me. And me mum. They supported me throughout everything."
The MOBO Award represents another significant milestone in Graham's distinguished career, made especially meaningful through his public acknowledgment of the familial support that has sustained his professional journey.
