Sydney Sweeney's Devil Wears Prada 2 Appearance Axed in Creative Overhaul
Sydney Sweeney's highly anticipated cameo in The Devil Wears Prada 2 has been completely excised from the final cut of the film, according to a new report from Entertainment Weekly. The Euphoria actress, 28, had filmed a three-minute scene last year alongside Emily Blunt that was originally slated to appear at the beginning of the sequel.
Structural Issues Led to Scene Removal
Entertainment Weekly revealed on Tuesday that the scene featuring Sweeney playing herself as a celebrity client being dressed by Blunt's character at Dior did not work structurally with the movie's final sequence. The publication reported that despite the removal, the film's crew expressed gratitude for Sweeney's participation in the shoot. Neither representatives for Disney nor Sweeney responded to requests for comment regarding the creative decision.
The scene was intended to show the original Runway magazine trio - played by Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci - approaching Blunt's character for help saving the fashion publication. When they arrive at her workplace, they discover Blunt assisting Sweeney's celebrity character, creating what was meant to be a humorous introductory moment.
Other Celebrity Appearances Still Expected
While Sweeney's cameo didn't survive the editing process, other notable figures are still expected to appear in the sequel. Today show star Jenna Bush Hager is reportedly making an appearance, though this news was accidentally spoiled on-air by her co-anchor Craig Melvin earlier this month. Additionally, pop icon Lady Gaga was spotted on the film's set last October, strongly suggesting she will have a surprise role in the production.
Returning Cast and New Additions
The Devil Wears Prada 2 arrives exactly two decades after the critically acclaimed original film, which followed recent college graduate Andy Sachs (Hathaway) as she navigated working as personal assistant to formidable fashion editor Miranda Priestly (Streep). The sequel brings back the original trio while introducing several new faces to the franchise, including Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu and Bridgerton star Simone Ashley.
The original movie was based on Lauren Weisberger's novel of the same name, which drew from her experiences working as assistant to Vogue editor Anna Wintour. Ironically, since the film's release, Wintour and Streep have developed a friendship and discovered they are actually sixth cousins by blood.
Fan Reactions and Trailer Observations
As excitement builds for the sequel's May 1 theatrical premiere, some fans have expressed concerns about certain elements in the promotional material. Observant viewers noted a bizarre moment in the trailer showing a meme from the first movie, which wouldn't logically exist within the film's universe. Additionally, an editing error was spotted showing an onlooker recording Hathaway on set with a phone in the background of a scene.
The removal of Sweeney's cameo represents a significant creative adjustment for the highly anticipated sequel, though the film still promises numerous celebrity appearances and the return of beloved characters from the original cinematic hit.
