Trump Claims China Persuaded Iran to Negotiate Ceasefire Amid Threats
Trump: China Persuaded Iran to Negotiate Ceasefire

Donald Trump has stated he believes Iran was persuaded to negotiate by China, leading to a two-week ceasefire agreement that will see the Strait of Hormuz re-opened and attacks halted. This announcement came after the former president issued a series of dire threats as an 8pm ET deadline for Iran to re-open the vital shipping lane approached.

Trump's Chilling Threats Precede Ceasefire

In a post on Truth Social, Trump warned, "A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, but it probably will." This stark message underscored the high stakes involved in the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest maritime corridors. The ceasefire was declared just hours before the deadline, averting potential escalation.

Chinese Intervention and Pakistani Mediation

According to reports, Iran accepted the Pakistani-mediated ceasefire following a last-minute intervention by China. Sources indicate Beijing was driven by concerns over the economic fallout if Trump followed through with his threats. When asked by AFP if China was involved in convincing Tehran to negotiate, Trump responded, "I hear yes. Yes they were."

The New York Times, citing three Iranian officials, confirmed that China asked Iran "to show flexibility and defuse tensions" amid fears of economic repercussions. Beijing is a close partner of Iran and the main buyer of Iranian oil, much of which passes through the Strait of Hormuz. China also maintains strong economic ties with Gulf countries and has repeatedly criticized Iran's attacks during the conflict with Israel and the US.

Approval from Iranian Leadership

Three officials revealed that the ceasefire agreement was approved by Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Khamenei, who has not been publicly seen since being appointed to replace his father Ali Khamenei after the latter was killed in US-Israeli strikes on February 28, is believed to have been wounded in the attack. This leadership transition has added complexity to the negotiations.

Trump's Announcement and Peace Talks

Announcing the ceasefire on Truth Social, Trump detailed conversations with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. He stated, "Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks."

Trump further explained, "This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East. We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate. Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated."

Future Negotiations in Islamabad

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has offered to host peace talks between the US and Iran, with discussions scheduled to begin in Islamabad on Friday. This diplomatic effort aims to build on the ceasefire and address long-term peace in the region. The involvement of multiple nations highlights the international dimensions of the conflict and the urgent need for de-escalation.

The ceasefire marks a critical juncture in the ongoing tensions, with China's role as a mediator underscoring its growing influence in Middle Eastern affairs. As negotiations proceed, the world watches closely to see if this temporary halt in hostilities can lead to a more stable and peaceful resolution.
