Trump Extends Iran Ceasefire Citing 'Seriously Fractured' Tehran Regime
In a last-minute diplomatic manoeuvre, former US President Donald Trump has announced an extension to the fragile ceasefire with Iran, declaring that the Tehran regime is "seriously fractured". This critical decision arrives as the deadline for the current truce rapidly approached and proposed negotiations in Islamabad were suspended indefinitely.
Pakistani Mediation and Stalled Talks
The extension follows an urgent request from Pakistan, which has been actively mediating the protracted conflict. Pakistani leaders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, engaged in frantic efforts throughout Tuesday to persuade both Washington and Tehran to commit to further discussions. However, these hopes diminished significantly when US Vice President JD Vance cancelled a planned trip to Pakistan. This cancellation occurred after Tehran refused to guarantee its attendance at any proposed talks, casting a shadow over the diplomatic process.
"Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
He further directed the US military to continue the naval blockade of Iran's ports and to remain on high alert, extending the ceasefire until Iranian officials submit a coherent proposal and subsequent discussions conclude.
Trump's Hardline Stance and Iranian Defiance
This conciliatory move contrasts sharply with Trump's earlier rhetoric. Just prior to the announcement, he told CNBC he was prepared to renew military attacks against Iran if sufficient progress was not achieved, stating he did not wish to extend the ceasefire. "Well, I expect to be bombing because I think that's a better attitude to go in with. But, you know, we're ready to go. I mean, the military is raring to go," he remarked, arguing that Iran had no alternative but to negotiate given the significant degradation of its military capabilities.
Trump asserted that US forces had "taken out their navy, we've taken out their air force, we've taken out their leaders," and claimed a form of "regime change" had occurred, installing what he described as "much more rational" individuals in power.
In response, Iran's parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf—previously tipped as Tehran's chief negotiator—accused Trump of attempting to transform the negotiating table into a "table of surrender." In a post on X, Qalibaf declared, "We do not accept negotiations under the shadow of threats," and indicated that Iran was preparing to "reveal new cards on the battlefield," signalling potential military escalations.

The ongoing conflict, particularly the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz—a vital global supply route for oil and gas—has inflicted a severe economic shock worldwide, sending energy prices soaring and disrupting international trade.
