President Donald Trump floated the idea of joining the Artemis II astronauts on a future moon mission during a White House meeting on Wednesday. The president invited the NASA crew to the Oval Office to honor their historic journey to the Moon, the first such mission since the Nixon administration.
Trump Praises Astronauts' Courage
“We’re very proud of these people. Unbelievable courage,” Trump said, addressing the astronauts. “A lot of other things too, by the way, to get in there you have to be very smart, have to do a lot of things physically good, so I would have no trouble making it. We will have to try it sometime.”
Presidential Spaceflight Question
The president then turned to NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and asked, “Is a president allowed to go up in one of these missions?” Isaacman responded, “We can get working on that, Mr. President.”
NASA astronauts Christina Koch, Victor Glover, and Reid Wiseman, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, stood behind the Resolute desk, remaining expressionless as Trump fielded political questions.
Koch and Glover made history during their 10-day journey, becoming the first woman and first Black man to reach the moon, respectively.
