The White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump has met with his national security team to discuss a new Iranian proposal aimed at reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and de-escalating the ongoing Middle East conflict. According to multiple US media reports, Trump is reportedly dissatisfied with the offer, which seeks to decouple the resolution of the current standoff from broader negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme.
Strait of Hormuz Closure Sparks Global Oil Price Surge
The prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, has driven a sharp increase in international crude prices. Iran's decision to block the waterway has drawn widespread condemnation, particularly from Western nations reliant on Persian Gulf oil exports.
International Reactions
Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz has weighed in, suggesting that the United States “is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership” amid the ongoing crisis. The United Kingdom has called for the unconditional reopening of the Strait, rejecting any proposals that would involve the imposition of tolls or the creation of security risks for commercial shipping.
Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, held talks in Moscow, where Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for Tehran's position. Iran has also criticised recent US seizures of oil tankers in the region, labelling the actions as “piracy”.
The diplomatic manoeuvring comes as the international community closely watches for signs of a potential breakthrough or further escalation in one of the world's most volatile regions.
