Donald Trump has expressed that he is “not happy” with Iran’s latest negotiation proposal, issuing an ultimatum that could lead to military action if a deal is not reached. The US president’s comments come after Iran stated it remains open to diplomacy, provided the United States alters its demands and rhetoric.
Trump’s Ultimatum
Speaking on Friday, Trump said the United States has “already won” the war in Iran but wants to win by a “bigger margin.” He threatened to “blast them away” if Tehran does not agree to a deal. The president’s remarks signal a hardening of the US stance as peace talks appear to have broken down once again.
Iran’s Response
Iran has warned of “long and painful strikes” in response to any US attack, despite submitting a new proposal for talks. The Iranian government emphasised that it is prepared to negotiate if Washington changes its approach. However, Tehran cautioned against expecting swift outcomes from the latest proposal.
Details of Iran’s proposal have not been disclosed by its IRNA news agency. Previous attempts to separate the nuclear dispute from the broader agenda have failed to yield progress. Global oil prices saw a 0.4 per cent decrease following news of the new proposal, though analysts remain cautious about the prospects for a diplomatic breakthrough.
