Trump Considers Iran's Strait Proposal as Germany Warns of Humiliation
President Donald Trump has met with his national security team to discuss a proposal from Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the ongoing Middle East conflict. The White House confirmed that no decision has been made, but multiple US media reports suggest Trump is dissatisfied with the proposal, which would decouple the conflict from Iran's nuclear programme and leave that issue for later discussion.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated Trump's firm stance: “The president’s red lines with respect to Iran have been made very clear, not just to the American public, but to them as well.” She declined to say whether the proposal was being considered, noting only that discussions took place.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that the US is being humiliated by Iran in the stalled negotiations. “An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by these so-called Revolutionary Guards. And so I hope that this ends as quickly as possible,” he said, accusing Tehran of outmaneuvering Washington.
Iran Stands Firm
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed Iran is “standing up to the world's greatest superpower” and that Washington “has not achieved a single one of their goals.” He told reporters in St Petersburg that the US requested negotiations, adding, “We have not heard from Washington.” Araghchi also praised Russia's support, saying the war demonstrated Iran's strong allies.
Putin Praises Iran's Courage
During a visit to Moscow, Araghchi met with President Vladimir Putin, who expressed support for Iran. “We see how courageously and heroically the Iranian people are fighting for their independence and sovereignty,” Putin said. He added that Russia would do everything to serve Iran's interests and achieve peace.
Proposal Details and Deadlock
Iran's proposal would reopen the Strait of Hormuz without addressing its nuclear programme, which would be discussed later. US officials said accepting the deal could deny Trump a political victory. Iran also wants the US to end its blockade of the country. The talks remain deadlocked, with Iran insisting on no immediate nuclear concessions.
UK Warns Iran 'Holding World to Ransom'
UK Minister Stephen Doughty warned that Iran is “holding the rest of the world to ransom” over the Strait of Hormuz. He called for the strait to be reopened fully and unconditionally, without tolls or security risks, in line with international law. “Freedom of navigation means navigation must be free,” he told the UN Security Council.
Iran Slams US Tanker Seizures
Iran condemned US seizures of tankers allegedly linked to Tehran as “piracy” and “armed robbery.” Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the US is legalising piracy, calling it a brazen violation of international law and maritime security.
