UK Hosts Positive Talks on Strait of Hormuz Mission: 'We Can't Let Them Down'
UK Hosts Positive Talks on Strait of Hormuz Mission

Military planners from over 40 nations have concluded constructive talks in London, aiming to forge a UK- and France-led mission to keep the Strait of Hormuz open once the conflict with Iran concludes. The two-day conference, hosted at the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood, sought to build upon discussions held last week between Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.

Defensive Plan for Commercial Shipping

The primary objective was to agree upon a defensive plan that would restore confidence for commercial shipping traversing this critical waterway. Defence Secretary John Healey addressed the attendees, emphasising the immense responsibility resting on their shoulders. “Millions of people are looking to our leaders, and to you, for the success of the work that you’re doing over these two days. I know you won’t let them down. We can’t let them down,” he stated.

Global Economic Implications

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital artery for global energy supplies, with approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through it. Iran’s effective closure of the strait following the US-Israeli bombing campaign that began in February has precipitated a global economic shock, sending energy prices soaring. The mission aims to safeguard freedom of navigation, clear mines if necessary, and protect vessels once hostilities cease.

Mr Healey expressed gratitude to the assembled planners, saying: “A huge thank you and respect to you all for being here. I can’t tell you how proud we are to have you here at our Permanent Joint headquarters in the UK. Our task is to turn the diplomatic consensus of our leaders into practical military plans that can safeguard freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”

The talks, held on Wednesday and Thursday, generated clear momentum and were described as constructive by participants. The multinational, defensive mission is seen as crucial for international trade, energy stability, and economic security for all nations reliant on the strait.
