Ukrainian Covert Unit Launches Attack on Russian Tanker from Libyan Territory
Officials in Libya have disclosed that a clandestine unit of Ukrainian forces executed a strike on a Russian oil tanker while operating from western Libya. The targeted vessel, the Russian-flagged Arctic Metagaz, was transporting 61,000 tons of liquefied natural gas when it suffered a sudden explosion in a massive fire early in March, in what is suspected to be a sea drone attack.
The Arctic Metagaz is a component of Russia's so-called shadow fleet, which transports oil in defiance of international sanctions imposed due to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. The tanker sustained severe damage, prompting the evacuation of its crew, and subsequently drifted into Libyan waters.
While Ukraine has not directly commented on this specific incident, it maintains that Russia utilises its oil export revenues to finance the ongoing war, thereby rendering its tanker fleet legitimate military targets.
Former CIA Chief Declares Putin Has Lost Strategic Advantage
In a separate development, former CIA director David Petraeus asserted that Vladimir Putin's forces "no longer have the upper hand" in the conflict with Ukraine. Speaking to CBS News, Petraeus highlighted the disparity in resources, noting Russia heavily outnumbers and outguns Ukraine, with an economy ten to twelve times larger.
"And yet the Ukrainian forces right now are stopping the Russians cold on the front lines," he stated, underscoring the resilience of Kyiv's military despite the odds.
Russia Issues Threats to Baltic States Over Oil Terminal Attacks
Moscow has threatened a "response" against the Baltic nations, accusing them of facilitating Ukraine's drone campaign targeting Russian oil facilities. Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova claimed that Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania permitted Ukrainian drones to traverse their airspace to strike oil terminals on the Baltic Sea coast.
Ukraine has repeatedly attacked Russia's northwestern Leningrad region, which borders Estonia. "If the regimes of these countries have enough sense, they will listen. If not, they will have to deal with a response," Zakharova warned, without specifying the nature of the potential retaliation.
Russian TV Hosts Advocate for Nuclear Strikes on Ukraine
Hosts on Russia's state-run Rossiya 1 television station have openly discussed employing nuclear weapons against Ukraine, arguing that Putin's current strategy is failing to achieve success. Military analyst Mikhail Khodarenok suggested Russia should abandon caution, proposing a shift to nuclear arms to conclude the conflict within ten days.
"The Ukrainian leadership will be faced with the question of whether the country will be left in complete ruins, or we move to some kind of peace agreement," Khodarenok said. Another host welcomed him to the "Nuclear Maniacs Club," endorsing the call for escalated measures.
International Dimensions: African Soldiers and Satellite Espionage
Russia has confirmed the deaths of 16 Cameroonian soldiers fighting in Ukraine, according to a memo to the Russian Embassy in Cameroon. Moscow has recruited fighters from various African nations amid its own conscript shortages, with Ukraine estimating over 1,700 Africans have been enlisted, often under deceptive pretenses.
Additionally, a Ukrainian intelligence assessment reviewed by Reuters alleges that Russian satellites conducted detailed imagery surveys of military sites across the Middle East to assist Iran in targeting US forces. The report indicates at least 24 surveys of 46 objects in 11 countries, with attacks following shortly after, suggesting coordinated Russian-Iranian collaboration.
Humanitarian and Diplomatic Notes
In a lighter moment, Ukrainian troops used a drone to evacuate a cat and dog from the frontline, flying the animals 12 kilometres to safety after a food supply mission. The brigade reported the pets recovered well and have a good appetite.
On the diplomatic front, US Vice President JD Vance accused the EU of meddling in Hungary's election, endorsing pro-Kremlin Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Vance criticised Brussels for attempting to undermine Hungary's economy and energy independence, aligning with Trump administration stances that challenge traditional US foreign policy norms.
President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced that Ukrainian military expertise is aiding Middle Eastern consultations on securing the Strait of Hormuz, leveraging Kyiv's experience in maritime defence and countering drone threats from the Black Sea conflict.
