A confidential internal Pentagon email has reportedly outlined options for penalising NATO allies deemed insufficiently supportive of US operations in the ongoing war with Iran. Among the proposed measures is a reassessment of the American stance on Britain's claim to the Falkland Islands, alongside suspending Spain from the alliance.
Pentagon Memo Reveals Frustration
The memo, obtained by sources, expresses significant frustration over certain allies' reluctance to grant essential Access, Basing, and Overflight (ABO) rights for the Iran conflict. These policy considerations emerge amid former President Donald Trump's past criticisms of NATO allies for not contributing sufficiently and his questioning of the alliance's value.
Examples of Allied Reluctance
Spain's refusal to allow its bases or airspace for attacks on Iran and Britain's initial hesitation to grant US access to its bases are cited as examples of allied reluctance. The memo suggests that such behaviour could trigger punitive measures, including a review of the US position on the Falklands, which have been a source of tension between the UK and Argentina.
The development comes as a bombshell in the context of the Iran war threat, potentially straining the special relationship between the US and UK. A 2024 statement by then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed that the Falklands are British and will remain British, underscoring the sensitivity of the issue.
The Pentagon has not officially commented on the leaked memo, but the implications for NATO cohesion and transatlantic relations are significant.
