Spain has dismissed reports suggesting the Pentagon is considering punitive measures against the country for its reluctance to support US operations in the Iran war. The internal Pentagon email outlined options for punishing NATO allies, including suspending Spain from the alliance.
Spain's Stance on International Law
Spain has refused to grant US forces access to its military bases or airspace, stating that US-Israel actions in the Iran war contravene international law. This has infuriated President Donald Trump, prompting the Pentagon to explore punitive measures.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez responded to the reports, saying, "Well, we do not work with emails. We work with official documents and positions taken, in this case, by the government of the United States."
Commitment to Allies Within Legal Framework
Sánchez doubled down on Spain's position, stating, "The position of the government of Spain is clear: absolute collaboration with the allies, but always within the framework of international legality."
The Pentagon email also suggested other punitive actions against NATO allies perceived as lacking support in the Iran war, but Spain remains firm in its commitment to international law.
