Xi Warns Trump of Potential Conflict Over Taiwan in Beijing Meeting
Xi Warns Trump of Taiwan Conflict Risk in Beijing Talks

Chinese President Xi Jinping has cautioned US President Donald Trump that disagreements over Taiwan could lead to "clashes and even conflicts" between the two nations. The warning came during a two-hour meeting in Beijing on Thursday, as reported by China's foreign ministry.

Taiwan at the Forefront of Talks

Xi emphasized that Taiwan is "the most important issue in China-US relations." China seeks to prioritize the status of Taiwan, which it claims as part of its territory, amid concerns that other topics such as the US-led war on Iran and trade disputes might overshadow the agenda. Beijing has urged Washington to reduce support for the self-governing island, with Xi making "unification" a key legacy goal. He has not ruled out using force to achieve this.

Trump's Praise and Pledges

Trump, in turn, described Xi as a "great leader" and noted that Xi had pledged not to supply weapons to Iran, despite recent reports of Chinese arms manufacturers discussing deals with Tehran. The White House readout of the meeting highlighted agreements on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for energy flow and potential Chinese purchases of US oil to reduce reliance on Iran. However, discussions on market access for US firms and fentanyl controls were absent from the Chinese readout.
