Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared that Russia "does not deserve any easing or lifting of sanctions" following devastating overnight attacks that resulted in 16 fatalities and approximately 100 injuries across Ukraine. The president emphasised that Russia's aggressive actions necessitate a robust international response to protect lives and promote peace.
Massive Aerial Assault Targets Key Cities
Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces launched nearly 700 drones and 19 ballistic missiles in the assault, primarily targeting the capital city of Kyiv, as well as Odesa and Dnipro. The strikes caused significant damage, with smoke billowing over buildings in Kyiv, as captured in photographs from the scene. The president stated, "Russia is betting on war, and the response must be exactly that: we must defend lives with all available means, and we must also apply pressure for the sake of peace with the same full force."
International Pressure and Diplomatic Moves
Zelenskyy underscored the importance of maintaining sanctions, asserting, "There can be no normalisation of Russia as it is today. Pressure on Russia must work." Meanwhile, in related diplomatic developments, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is scheduled to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Germany's Friedrich Merz will host Ireland's Micheál Martin. These meetings highlight ongoing international coordination in response to the conflict.
The attacks occurred on Thursday, 16 April 2026, marking another tragic escalation in the ongoing war. The Ukrainian government continues to call for global solidarity and increased support to counter Russian aggression and safeguard civilian lives.
