Channel Crossings by Migrants Drop 41% in First Half of 2026
Channel Crossings Drop 41% in First Half of 2026

Migrant arrivals in the UK via the English Channel dropped sharply in the first half of 2026, with 11,884 crossings recorded—a 41% decrease from the 19,982 arrivals during the same period in 2025, according to Home Office data.

Factors Behind the Decline

The steep drop is attributed to multiple factors including weather conditions, the availability of small boat parts, government policies, and migrant flows into Europe. In April, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood signed a three-year agreement with French authorities worth £662 million to bolster beach patrols and reduce crossings.

Mahmood is also pursuing asylum system reforms, including making refugee status temporary, to deter crossings and expedite deportations.

Historical Context

The 2026 figure is 12% lower than the 13,489 arrivals in the first half of 2024, but 4% higher than the 11,433 in 2023 and 7% below the 12,747 in 2022. Despite the overall decline, the average number of migrants per boat rose to a record 65 in January-June 2026, up from 62 in 2025 and 58 in the same period of 2025.

In June 2026, 2,742 migrants crossed the Channel, the lowest June total since 2021.
