Professor Matt Goodwin, the right-wing commentator and former academic, has been officially named as the Reform UK candidate for the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election. The announcement has sparked controversy, with Goodwin's campaign drawing both fervent support and fierce opposition.
Goodwin, known for his GB News show and large Substack following, has been described as an elusive presence in the constituency. Despite claims of daily campaigning, many local voters reported not having seen him in person. His campaign has been conducted largely online, with carefully curated media appearances and brief photo opportunities.
The by-election has been marked by accusations of dirty tricks and disinformation. A member of Goodwin's team, Adam Mitula, was reportedly suspended for racist social media posts. Reform UK also faced debunked claims of doctoring photos to add posters in house windows. Far-right activist Tommy Robinson has publicly endorsed Goodwin.
Goodwin's campaign has been notably guarded, with requests for interviews or canvassing accompaniment denied. He was withdrawn from a hustings in Gorton, with his team citing an inability to provide an impartial environment. Critics question why a man with a significant public platform would seek to represent a constituency he had barely visited before January.
